Greenpeace's Arctic Sunrise has been part of demonstrations in the Arctic before, such as this one protesting seismic testing.
Russia has blocked a Greenpeace ship from entering Arctic waters where the environmentalist group was planning to protest against oil exploration activities by Rosneft and Exxon Mobil, the group has said.
Russian authorities had denied the icebreaker Arctic Sunrise entry to the Northern Sea Route, citing questions over the vessel's ice strengthening, Greenpeace said in a statement.
It said the Arctic Sunrise has a higher ice classification than many of the more than 400 vessels that have been granted access to the northern sea route this year.
"This is a thinly veiled attempt to stifle peaceful protest and keep international attention away from Arctic oil exploration in Russia," Greenpeace campaigner Christy Ferguson said.
I tried searching for this on RussiaToday but it seemed strangely absent.
Good on 'em. It's good to listen to legit environmental concerns, but Greenpeace are little more than eco-terrorists and shouldn't be allowed near anything more important than the office stapler.

Greenpeace are eco-terrorists?
Last time they were involved with a bomb (to the best of my knowledge) it was when the French sank their ship. (Coincidentally one that was an unarmed fishing vessel in port, but a French naval victory it was nonetheless).

You'd be hard pressed to find anything that shows Matuschka Rossya in a negative light.
Why are people rating this winner? These people are protesting the oil drilling in Arctic, which if we have not learn already can be devastating if something like a leak/spill where to happen - Imagine the gulf again, except little or to no media coverage.
As pious as Greenpeace's cause is, all the ramming and prop-fowling and shit they do to fishing and whaling ships is ridiculous
yes but until we don't need oil anymore this shit will happen
greenpeace is so hypocrytical
"hurr no don't drill for oil" they say while on their boat that consumes large quantities of oil products
If you're going to protest drilling for oil, don't use oil.
As a civilization, we're not yet at the point where not using oil is feasible. We need it, and drilling in the arctic is one of the last (easy to access) places where we can find it. The industry has tried to make it as safe as they can, but accidents happen.
If greenpeace wants to be useful, start researching ways to get the planet off this binge of oil consumption instead of screaming about how drilling for oil is bad.

By this logic all protesters are hypocrites. The people who are angry with BP and the gulf oil spill must be hypocrites because they used cars that run off of gasoline.
Greenpeace are legitimate eco-terrorists. They board drill rigs and oil platforms with motorboats for no legitimate reason. For all the crew knows, they could be pirates. Really, this is justified.

Sadly, not a very valid point of view when it comes to protest.

No it isn't lol. Did you even read the source?
Russian authorities had denied the icebreaker Arctic Sunrise entry to the Northern Sea Route, citing questions over the vessel's ice strengthening, Greenpeace said in a statement.
They weren't allowed because of a question over the vessel itself (which is bullshit because the Russian government allows practically anybody to sail up there now the ice is gone).
This is just an attempt to silence the opposition, something that has a long and proud tradition in Russia.

Are terrorists legitimate opposition?
Are terrorists legitimate opposition?
Conflating Greenpeace with terrorists is such bullshit. Even then, why does the Russian government allowed to do this? Greenpeace is intending to protest but the act of sailing the Northern Sea route is in itself not a criminal act.
They raise a legitimate issue and the Russian government tries to stamp them out. They do the same with homosexuals in Russia and use then a shitty news organization to spread more lies and ignore the reality.

Isn't that Sea Shepard's department? I thought Paul Watson was forced to resign from Green Peace because of those tactics
Why are people rating this winner?
Greenpeace are defectors who for some reason are still entitled to a Canadian passport.
They make the whole damn country look bad. There's even hippies in Vancouver who hate their efforts which is something to say.

No, they're terrorists. They board ships and attempt to disrupt the flow of oil, a vital resource to the global economy.
No, they're terrorists. They board ships and attempt to disrupt the flow of oil, a vital resource to the global economy.
So banning people on a protest ship is acceptable? For the reason that isn't even tied to "terrorism" but some baloney excuse to prevent them going?
No, they're terrorists. They board ships and attempt to disrupt the flow of oil, a vital resource to the global economy.
I remember watching a video of whatever that ship was called when they were trying to stop whale hunting by the japanese. They boarded a ship and got stopped in seconds, what were they thinking.

If just 'attempting to disrupt' something is enough to make you a terrorist then nearly all protesters ever are or have been terrorists.
If just 'attempting to disrupt' something is enough to make you a terrorist then nearly all protesters ever are or have been terrorists.
It's vital to the world economy, and boarding rigs and ships is terrorism.
Isn't that Sea Shepard's department? I thought Paul Watson was forced to resign from Green Peace because of those tactics
Greenpeace does those things from time to time. They're just more wreakless than Sea Shepherd.
[editline]21st August 2013[/editline]
And when did they get an ice breaker? Business must be good.
It's vital to the world economy, and boarding rigs and ships is terrorism.
Why is it you think it is acceptable to drill for oil in the polar ice and disrupt wildlife there yet its not ok for a ship full of hippies to sail there and complain?
Why is it you think it is acceptable to drill for oil in the polar ice and disrupt wildlife there yet its not ok for a ship full of hippies to sail there and complain?
If by sail there and complain you mean boarding rigs then it's not okay.
They can sail and complain all they want, but as soon as they start getting on ships that are not theirs they deserve to get chucked off or whatever might happen to them.
They board the ships because theyre fed up with everyone else doing nothing. If they do drastic things theyll get noticed, like recently climbing up the Shard.
Better to board ships and get fucking mad over our destructive habits than sit and type shit about "guyz we need to stop this" then fapping.
If by sail there and complain you mean boarding rigs then it's not okay.
But the people in this ship haven't boarded a rig. Sailing up there is in itself not a crime.

AFAIK, they had a ship that didn't run on oil but then it was sank when they tried to ram a Japanese whaling ship with it
EDIT : I was thinking of Sea Shepard.
Either way, they are both Eco-terrorists.
Greenpeace had the Rainbow Warrior which was a large sailboat but it was blown up by French special forces.
They're up to the Rainbow Warrior III now which is a diesel electric sailing yacht.

It's more of a show-off piece than anything really useful.

The Icebreaker is new to me though. Always wondered why groups like this never tried to acquire one. They cost a pretty penny, Greenpeace has more than enough to throw at one though.

If they're not going to attempt to stop Japanese whaling, who will? The Japanese? Fuck no, that makes them the big bucks.

Yeah, they should just hold up signs and stand in parks. That'll totally get them the media attention needed to stop all this shit with oil and whaling.
