That sounds pretty fucking cool. I hope there will be a livestream up.
faq
Only some 'major' sessions will be recorded, not all of them.
Powers: The larger, formal presentations will be recorded and made available after the event. However, the smaller and more intimate breakout sessions will not be captured or replayed. I'm just wondering what this may bring in conjunction with AMD's launch of their 'Kaveri' APUs (which happens to be the same day as this - Jan 14th), supposedly with GCN & Mantle. I'm hoping sooner or later Valve announces the finale of the half-life series.
Again everyone will hype thinking Valve will announce the next half-life and once again everyone will be disappointed.
On the Unity engine and only supporting Occulus Rift output :v:.
Q: Where can I register as press/media? A: This is an off the record event.
That's a pretty neat idea. Tho I guess it doesn't exactly shield against repercussions for stating something controversial if everything's recorded and will come to light anyway.
Also, tweet questions and suggestions live to the on-stage team and try and make them crack up. Note that these people don’t have a sense of humor, so if you manage to break them we’ll definitely make it worth your while.
lol
That's a pretty neat idea. Tho I guess it doesn't exactly shield against repercussions for stating something controversial if everything's recorded and will come to light anyway.
Only the talks might be recorded, they've not bugged all the seating.
How interesting :) I'm so happy to see that the Oculus Rift is getting such good exposure and support. I've been wanting a ~Good~ VR Product for as long as I can remember. As soon as they release the consumer version I'm getting it, no ifs ands or buts about it.
[thumb]http://media.steampowered.com/img/SDD/agenda_grid_2.png[/thumb]
Help on this front may come from game maker Valve as it pursues its Steam Box project. Valve designer Brian Coomer says the company is "days away" from releasing a VR software development kit that will give game makers a standard way to provide an interface for VR controllers. The kit will be released at Valve's forthcoming Steam Dev Days conference due to take place on 14-15 January in Seattle. Valve's interest in VR has been long known, says Mr Coomer, as has its relationship with Oculus Rift. "There's also technology in development at Valve based around head-tracking and headset manufacture and design," he says. "We are working with other companies right now but we have not made any specific announcements."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25661997
Like quarter of the sessions are about Linux and/or OpenGL. Valve is taking this seriously.
Maybe they might take their franchises seriously also.. eg. Half-Life 3
Maybe they might take their franchises seriously also.. eg. Half-Life 3
Maybe if they didn't prove to themselves where the money is at, they would be more likely to commit to that. Half-Life 3 is never ever going to make them as much money as Dota 2 or even TF2 does, and these produce it annually, with steady stream of delicious creamy income. If they have any initiative to make Half-Life 3, it might be to either promote their technology (Source 2), or in shape or form nobody would expect (and probably wouldn't be too happy) right now, or, they might just do it for pure artistic pleasure and accomplishment. Thing is that, even if I wouldn't call Valve greedy, the big green's voice is strong, and I can imagine that ignoring it is hard.

Especially since knowing valve, it won't just be a standard linear shooter this time around with nothing else to go with it. I can expect HL3 to involve something like the Orange Box, or be a game that uses VR better than any other game, or involves some kind of tech/design that hasn't been in a game before, or maybe even ends up F2P somehow. Either way, HL3 preorders would be through the roof so much that pretty much the majority of all active steam accounts would likely buy into it, which is huge. Lets assume active accounts are a third of the registered users, which is somehwere near 64million. So around 30 million active accounts. Half of which buy HL3 - thats 15million copies sold. Which while isn't as much of a "free easy sustainable cash cow" as TF2 and DOTA2 are, is still a huge return. I can guarantee pretty much everyone on facepunch would buy HL3 for example, just like how there is hardly anyone here who doesn't own HL2. And facepunch is within the top 20 online forums in existence as far as user base and volume go. Especially since valve doesn't really operate on "how much does this project cost?" levels, everyone just works on something at valve. There's probably been more combined development time put into the lifetime of TF2 or Steam itself than what it would be to make HL3

GTA IV sold "25M+" and that's, well, fucking GTA IV.
I'm really interested in the "Is Early Access Right For You?" panel. They've got some interesting people lined up for that.
[thumb]http://media.steampowered.com/img/SDD/agenda_grid_2.png[/thumb]
is that a typo or is there really a guy called DJ Powers at Valve? [editline]15th January 2014[/editline] oh he's that marketing guy

I'm assuming that Half-Life is this holy grail within the company that no one really dares to touch with a ten feet pole unless they're absolutely sure they're going to make a game the fans love and the old timers approve of.
I really do hope they make headway in convincing game companies to make games for, or at least port to, Linux. Games are the only thing really keeping me on Windows.
wish i could be there
