An explosion at an ammunition store in western Turkey has killed 25 soldiers and wounded four others, the army says. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19499146 The blast happened at a military storage where hand grenades were being kept. A mistake had been made as the grenades were being handled, Turkish media reported. It is thought many of the soldiers were trapped inside the building as firefighters tackled the huge blaze. The wounded have been sent to a military hospital for treatment. Rescuers found it difficult to reach the trapped soldiers because hand grenades lay strewn around the area, reports said.
Aren't grenades supposed to be rather safe for the handler? But the article does say they were "improperly stored".
Didn't something like that happen in Brazil not so long ago? There were grenades littered all around the general area that hadn't blown up. They were telling people to keep their hands off them. :v:
They might have been old and rusting, or they mishandled (i.e. were stupid) them
grenades have known to survive being in oceans for 50 years and fall out of planes, how the fuck can they mishandle these things? something stinks.
grenades have known to survive being in oceans for 50 years and fall out of planes, how the fuck can they mishandle these things? something stinks.
I dunno, maybe throwing they round, or even pulling out the pin and putting it back in for jokes? Sounds like something a stupid person might do
Grenades are tough; they usually don't explode unless the fuze is triggered(i.e. it's deliberately set off).
Maybe they were shitty old Soviet grenades.
maybe they were playing hot potato with a live grenade for shits and giggles oops
Maybe they were shitty old Soviet grenades.
Even WW2 grenades are known for being tough. I agree with Amplar, there's something wrong here.
"Improperly handled" doesn't mean "Somebody dropped one", it can mean just about anything. It also sounds better than "Yeah uh, the guys we had doing inventory were fucking around with some grenades..." in a press release.
Considering the person directly involved in the initial explosion is now part of the atmosphere we are breathing, we probably won't ever know.
grenades have known to survive being in oceans for 50 years and fall out of planes, how the fuck can they mishandle these things? something stinks.
Grenades when stored long term in places like depots are not fully assembled like you see out on the field. The explosive material with the casing and the detonator mechanism should be safely stored separately. The only really 'dangerous' time is when you're screwing the two parts together as if it's done improperly can detonate the grenade (or so they scared us with in the Army). The biggest no-no you can do is if you store both parts together in the same box, and it's probably what happened.
Even WW2 grenades are known for being tough. I agree with Amplar, there's something wrong here.
I've read somewhere that one of the autopsy doctors who handled the dead bodies claimed that the bodies have been dead for 10 days even before the explosion. People are claiming that the dead soldiers were brought from Kurdistan/Nothern Iraq to the depot, and they intentionally blew the depot up to make it look like an accident. Otherwise the military would riot against the government, since they are the reason for the whole mess in Turkey. The citizens and the Turkish army are against the Turkish government because they can't handle the PKK problem, so the government might have tried to cover this up to prevent a riot/coup. This is what I've read.
grenades have known to survive being in oceans for 50 years and fall out of planes, how the fuck can they mishandle these things? something stinks.
Could be that they stored the grenades with the detonator part inside. Grenades are suppose to be kept in storage inside boxes without the detonator inside. Could be that they even fucked up the storage even worse than just detonator mishap.
wow the family members of the arms depot workers mustve felt a real slap to the face
maybe they were playing hot potato with a live grenade for shits and giggles oops
Well now they have whole bunch of baked potatos.
