For such an incredibly obscure game, a lot of people come out of the woodwork here whenever it gets mentioned. God Bless this Spess
honk honk
One thing this review doesn't touch on is how absolutely long the rounds in this can get. It mentions they can slow to a crawl, but that's really an understatement. Round can be as short as a half hour or as long as 5 hours, and depending on what you did that shift, having the shuttle come mid-experimentation can be pretty heartbreaking when you know you'll have to do it all over again.
That said, this game does a lot that no other game can really do. It offers a groundbreaking simulation of what it's like to release a bunch of sociopaths onto a cramped tin can in space, and the results can be pretty damn funny. I recall with fondness the round in which I, a lonesome chemist, pumped my body full of regenerative chemicals and drifted space, constantly dying and healing through the damage until I came face to face with god himself who saw fit to bless me with an atomic basketball, which I then used to erase roughly 45% of the station with a chaos dunk. It was a good round.
All fear the greytide.
In case anybody didn't know and is interested, we have a SS13 thread here on Facepunch.
surprised he didn't mention Lifeweb
don't know much about it myself, but it's the weirdest thing I've seen come out of ss13
SS13 Is my favorite game of all time, its just insane how much fun you can have with this game.
I need to play this again, watching this video has made all the memories come flooding back
Like the time I ate 1,000 units of space LSD
& this monstrosity:

I remember asking someone to put my brain into a robot body because I was having dysmorphia issues with my character; they took my brain out, and then put it in a casket and launched me and my consciousness out of an airlock into the dark void.
Then the Space Station got ripped apart by mind-controlling mega-aliens.
The game was the best 3 or 4 years ago. Now its just run by no fun admins. You can't do anything without getting pmed by some furry moderator.
Lifeweb brought back the fun last year but it also became shit.
I find it difficult to get into other stations after years of playing Goon
it's just too different, and not in a good way
anyone feel the same way?

...unless you play security.
This sounds like something I'd put next to Dwarf Fortress and Eve's null sec on the shelf of games I wouldn't play myself, but love hearing player stories about.
I remember when the AI flooded the entire station quietly with gas and blew up half the station. I was an idiot and force opened a bulkhead and was blown away by back blast that my mining rig took most of the damage.

Opposite. Goonstation is an underpopulated labyrinth of machinery that's either way too fast or way too slow. The fact that it's run by goons is also a big minus. And this is coming from someone who started on goonstation.

I don't like Lifeweb solely because of the way it's ran and some of the more queer features it has.
Especially Randy.
I played this for a while but couldn't get into it.
I played a bunch of assistant but never really understood what to do. Maybe I'll give this game another go sometime and try out different jobs. Being a Pokemon Master seems kind of fun.
I've always been surprised at the lack of decent successors to this game considering how long people have played it. Most die out pretty quickly in development.
Love it when you can find an admin that can actually see the difference between having fun and griefing.
i've been programming for this game for 3 years, 5 months, and 23 days
it's been fun

when have you last played it?
it's changed quite a lot
I don't think goons are special in any way
I thought about trying to remake it as well using UE4. Making all the content for any game, especially SS13 is usually such a pain though.

I thought about making this game in 3D as well with simple styliEd graphics. But the modeling and art isn't the hard part about making this game!
Goonstation is lovely and I play on it regularly, I'm a mentor (think a help hotline for game mechanics). The community is really quite pleasant, and it's at this point way better optimized than most other codebases. Pretty much the only time it lags is if somebody does some insane shit or bombs literally the entire station.
Anybody who tells you it's objectively bad because "hyuk hyuk goons" is a chump. I don't even think it's that far knitted into the average SA culture at this point.
EDIT: Also like the only ways to get in trouble are to be a horrid shit (see: racist/homophobic/etc), kill people for no reason, or metagame.
This has an amazing effect of making everyone on r/ss13 call Goon a hugbox and makes the average idiot claim that the admins get 'triggered' when someone yells "I HATE NIGNOGS" or something over the comms
those people get banned pretty much immediately
its really funny too because other servers are way more anal about small details than goon, on goon you basically arent even expected to do your job, but you also arent expected to murder everyone. the depth of the gameplay and exploration/etc makes it ACTUALLY INTERESTING to do something other than kill people
The worst SS13 server has been hippe for a long time. Basically the new nox.

My best moment on goon was traitor geneticist. I mindslaved the captain and subverted the AI to do nothing but buy and hatch space bees and to kill anyone who tried to stop them. Eventually the sheer amount of bees made the server crash. I told the admin I started it and they just told me that nobody could have expected the server to implode and to just not do it again.

Say what you will about Nox, but it was by far the most cathartic server to play on. Best was when the mods/admins stopped banning people and enforcing rules without telling anyone.
By the way, if I were to get back into SS13 what would be the best server running a tg-esque code like nox and hippie?
I remember playing as a lizard for the first time when I was still learning the game. Another lizard guy came and showed me how to hack stuff and break into things (he wanted to dismantle the ship to overthrow the humans or something).
After showing me around, he took me into a room and stunned me. He stripped me of my clothes and items, left the room, then destroyed the floor panels so I couldn't walk across them. I was basically stuck in the room with a dead guy.
However, I was able to scavenge the room for items to make my escape. I got that fucker back.

My greatest moment was taking out the AI satellite on a malf round, tubed in with a sec officer and get stunned by a secborg and janiborg. Had a vox-bomb activated by "flame on". Wipe out the entire satellite, engineer comes in and finishes the AI with a crowbar.
There was a post somewhere where somebody had modified tcomms to where all talk was basically Jojo's "your next line is".
That was pretty fun to read.

Don't get why you'd play as a lizard when you get treated like a pre Civil Rights era black person.
