Boys will be boys after all, so no one ought to be really shocked by this latest bit of Top Gearnews. While out filming the latest DVD installment showcasing the perfect road trip, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond took to the scenic roads of France, behind the wheel of anAston Martin Vanquish and Porsche 911 GT3, respectively. But the pair’s arrival in France, shall we say, was a bit less than welcoming. They got busted by the French cops for speeding. Clarkson was clocked at going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone and Hammond was going 88 mph. seems like it was about time.
reminds me of the trip to the states they did where they edited the speedometer to always show 55
Bit of a bummer because they had some really good challenges in France and it's kind of the "go to place" for many of the things they did on TG. But on the plus side they don't have to go to France anymore, weehay!
As much as I can see the humour in this going 80+ MPH in a 55 MPH zone is a very stupid and selfish thing to do, and someone very easily could have been injured or killed in a crash if they'd fucked up. The limits aren't just there to police fun.
breaking the speed limit like that is kinda shitty though i mean jesus

They also own their driver license for at least 25 years and are pretty much professional drivers.
Still, That doesn't exactly give you a free pass to do whatever the fuck you want on the road...
but i don't think you should be "banned from driving" because of driving faster than the speed limit i have a feeling if it wasn't a super famous person that was going that fast, he would have just been fined out the ass, not banned.
Still, That doesn't exactly give you a free pass to do whatever the fuck you want on the road...
generally if they're going that fast WITH a film crew, there is usually a car/cars up ahead to clear the road.

for all their high speed runs and shit they have outriders making sure the roads are clear, they don't just find an empty-ish road and floor it

There are a ton of 55's here that are highways that just have a few bends in them where you really don't need to slow down if you're going 80 on them.
They have done way more dangerous stuff then just driving too fast. They also own their driver license for at least 25 years and are pretty much professional drivers.
this does not gives them a right to endanger lives for the sake of a scripted tv show
this does not gives them a right to endanger lives for the sake of a scripted tv show
No one said it did
We all think they're selfish for putting other people's lives in danger, but deep down, we all want to drive like top gear.
France is extremely anal about speed limits, but for good reason. French drivers are ruthless assholes at times.
Can't really chastise them, I've done worse. The adrenaline rush of speeding is pretty wicked, but I only do it when I'm late to school, which was once or twice.
I bet you do it more often than you think! C'mon, who doesn't speed every once in a while. It's not like you consciously make the decision every time, sometimes you just look down at the speedo and go, "Oh crap, I'd better back off a bit." This happens to me all the time on the freeway, the fast lane is often cruising along at 80mph or greater. I'm with you guys on being nearly 90mph in a 55mph is unsafe and selfish, but it IS Clarkson and Hammond... those guys know what they're doing and I highly doubt they'd do anything that would put the public in serious danger, there's likely more to the story here.
breaking the speed limit like that is kinda shitty though i mean jesus
if the speed limits in france are anything like the states then sometimes the speed limits are ridiculously low. like 55 mph on a 4 lane highway is way too slow
They normally have drivers ahead to radio them if there are any cars, tight bends or pedestrians near the road. Not to say they aren't at fault but it's not as dangerous as a typical driver doing the same
if the speed limits in france are anything like the states then sometimes the speed limits are ridiculously low. like 55 mph on a 4 lane highway is way too slow
adding to this, the highways in my area are all "65mph" speed limit but traffic usually does 75-80. They're actually passing a law (already did?) that will change speed limit to 75, because it's a norm and will stop "but all of traffic was doing the same speed" arguments against 15+mph tickets. It's actually an accepted norm in northern IL to do exactly 5 over the speed limit, so you don't have to worry about attracting attention for doing 75-80. People who hit 85+ tend to be really dangerous assholes that swerve through lanes without turning signals and such, so I hope now that things get rescaled, the "5 over" rule of thumb will stick better with highwaygoers

I feel like i'm the only one in the US who follows the speed limit. If you tailgate me when I'm doing 35 in a 35 you can eat a dick. Speed limits aren't there to be broken, etc.
Didn't Clarkson get pulled over by the French cops for going too slow in an earlier series? They should make up their minds lmao
I don't blame the French for this one. Don't speed.
It's like that on the Taconic State Parkway here in New York, the limit is 55 but even the slow lane averages around 70.
On the major Ontario highways (the 400-series they're called) the posted limit is almost always 100KM/H. Unless it's rush hour (and everyone is therefore doing ~20 on the highway) you'll find nearly everyone doing anywhere from 110-130. There's been a major push to raise the limits to at least 120 on the 400-series to stop people from getting tickets for going the speed of traffic. Also the general speeding convention is 10KM/H over.

Can't wait for the insane amount of inevitable jabs at the French
