Bernie Sanders is returning to his status as an independent after losing the Democratic nomination for president to Hillary Clinton.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Vermont senator announced he will be leaving the Democratic Party when he returns to work in the U.S. Senate this week.
"I was elected as an independent; I’ll stay two years more as an independent," Sanders, 74, said at the Bloomberg Politics breakfast on Tuesday.
As an elected official in Congress, Sanders caucused with the Democrats, but considers himself an independent due to his far-left-leaning views.
His contributions to the DNC platform are the real victory now

It's very unfortunate that some of his former supporters want to piss that away by voting for his polar opposite, Trump, or third-party.
Well, so much for betrayal.
It was all part of the plan.

They never supported him or his ideas, they were just anti-establishment idiots
This tells me he doesn't plan on running for president again, which is a shame. He only was a democrat to gain traction in the race, and I firmly believe that that helped a lot.
Well, guess I have to make a choice other than Sanders now...time to do some homework.

he'd either be entering the presidential race at 78 or 82 if he were to run again.
pretty sure he realizes that wouldn't be a smart choice
Some dems are shouting betrayal yet they elected a traitor to be their nominee.

Don't vote for Trump, nor for Hillary - vote for the platform Sanders shaped in the DNC
While I never did like him or his policies, the way he was knee-capped by the Democratic party from the start is abhorrent and should not be forgotten nor forgiven.
They never supported him or his ideas, they were just anti-establishment idiots
Or maybe we see through the bullshit of Killary Cliton and realize that either one is going to be bad for us in the long run.
Here's to hoping he returns in 2020 for another run.

Not a good reason to doom your country
Not a good reason to doom your country
And you think the US will be fine with Hillary as the president? I don't think so. She should be in jail.
And you think the US will be fine with Hillary as the president? I don't think so. She should be in jail.
believe it or not, politics isn't a comic book story where suddenly an experienced politician will do a complete 180 on her own platform and seek out to destroy her own party for her ego
she'll be obama's 3rd term with the most progressive democratic platform in US history
anything else will be dooming the democratic party's chances for president, senate, and house for the next decades since she's the face of democrats
And you think the US will be fine with Hillary as the president? I don't think so. She should be in jail.
The U.S. will do fine with Hillary. While she's still an absolutely horrid candidate, she's miles better than Trump.
I'd rather have a corrupt politician in office than an idiotic politician in office.
She should be in jail.
That doesn't actually mean she'd be a bad president.
While I never did like him or his policies, the way he was knee-capped by the Democratic party from the start is abhorrent and should not be forgotten nor forgiven.
yeah after watching the knives come out like that I wouldn't stay with the dems either, screw that
And you think the US will be fine with Hillary as the president? I don't think so. She should be in jail.
Shows how much you actually paid attention to the democratic platform.

He's probably gonna die before next election
lets put it this way
theres a rival superpower thats been seeking to expand that has everything to gain from USA becoming domestically & internationally weaker
guess who that superpower is and guess what candidate they've been actively supporting?
Not a good reason to doom your country
with stronger than normal third parties pulling votes from the establishment parties on both the left and right, i feel that if there ever was a time to vote third party it would be now. there is a lack of unity and a lot of disillusionment in both the republican and democrat parties so third parties may have a greater chance of gaining some foothold while sending a message of dissatisfaction to the establishment parties.

You have a very open definition of trason

You could simplify it and just say 'politician"
I hope this resonates a message with his previous "endorsement" of Rodham, really glad he seemingly didn't betray his principles in the end
I hope most people realize that his endorsement was done to advance his principles.
Politics involves compromise and trade. He gave an official endorsement, the Democrats added a bunch of his ideas to the official platform. And, because his ideas were popular enough that a lot of people were threatening to abandon the party over them, it's pretty likely that Hillary will follow through with them.
Just look at the final platform. Hell, even just the table of contents. $15 minimum wage. Public works projects. Bringing the law back to Wall Street. Stop the revolving door between regulators and industry. Increase the share of taxes paid by the wealthy. Campaign finance reform, including a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Tuition-free community college and debt-free paid college. It reads a lot more like a Sanders manifesto than a Clinton one.
We aren't getting a President Sanders. But because of the compromises that were made, if we get a President Clinton, we'll get a lot more of the benefits of a President Sanders than we would otherwise have gotten.
eh i really feel like while hes appealing to his home constituency, he really should stay a democrat and work into the party machinery more
He's probably gonna die before next election
probably not this extreme but either 4 or 8 years he wont be in any shape to run for prez by then because he will be 78 or 82 and thats just too old for the job
His contributions to the DNC platform are the real victory now
Now let's see how much of it ends up hollow campaign trail rhetoric that goes nowhere. My bet is on about 90-95% of it being wholly ignored because what Hilary's corporate overlords want flies against what he put on the platform.

2020 election debate:
"miss clinton, why did you ignore your democratic platform and the promises you promised like a stereotypical comic villian?"
"durrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, heil hitler"
They never supported him or his ideas, they were just anti-establishment idiots
I'm not trying to say that these "Bernie or Bust" guys are in the right, but does being anti-establishment really make you an idiot? Seriously, in this day and age?
Shit, I don't know if there's anything MORE american than distrusting the government.
