It's the fear of the unknown. Think of it this way, you're in the dark and hear a voice. You cannot see anything around you or make out what is even in front of you, it's the fear of the unknown that scares you. The voice could have been from someone outside, maybe a thief broke into the house, or you're just hearing things.
