Scientists have created embryonic-like stem cells by simply bathing ordinary skin or blood cells in a weak acid solution for half an hour in an astonishing breakthrough that could allow doctors in the future to repair diseased tissue with a patient’s own cells.
Researchers at the Riken Centre for Developmental Biology in Japan have announced the breakthrough in the journal Nature and it has been welcomed in Britain as an important step towards using stem cells routinely in medicine without the ethical or practical problems of creating human embryos or genetically modified cells.
Although the research was carried out on laboratory mice, scientists believe that the same approach should also work on human cells. It radically changes the way "pluripotent" stem cells - which can develop into any of the specialised tissues of the body - can be created from a patient's own cells as part of a "self-repair" kit.
"Once again Japanese scientists have unexpectedly rewritten the rules on making pluripotent cells from adult cells...that requires only transient exposure of adult cells to an acidic solution. How much easier can it possibly get?" said Professor Chris Mason, chair of regenerative medicine at University College London.

To demonstrate the potential of the cells the scientists injected them into mouse embryos and showed that they grew into tissues and organs throughout the animals' bodies.
Haruko Obokata at the Riken lab in Kobe, Japan, told the Guardian that her team had created several dozen mice that had tissues grown from the cells, and had followed their health for one to two years. "So far they appear to be healthy, fertile, and normal," she said.

Stem cell researchers are heralding a "major scientific discovery", with the potential to start a new age of personalised medicine.
Scientists in Japan showed stem cells can now be made quickly just by dipping blood cells into acid.
Stem cells can transform into any tissue and are already being trialled for healing the eye, heart and brain.
The latest development, published in the journal Nature, could make the technology cheaper, faster and safer.
We truly live in a marvelous age of technology and advancement. It's so nice to see that the stigma surrounding stem cells is finally starting to wear off.
I love you stem cells.
Oh fuck I was born at the right time. Are these the cells capable of growing entire organs for transplants?
Im gonna live for a billion years like the emperor.

hm.
Now this is a really amazing discovery. I'm excited for where this could lead from here on in.
What is this devil magic boycott this before its too late
Remember:
Stem Cells and Carbon Nanotubes will save the world.
This is amazing!
Finally, we can make advancements in the field of organ transplantation and eventually phase out the use of immunosuppressants in transplant medicine.

Where's your miracles now, Jesus?

No.
We truly live in a marvelous age of technology and advancement. It's so nice to see that the stigma surrounding stem cells is finally starting to wear off.
The stigma only really arose because one of the earliest "easy" sources of stem cells was embryos, which had "right to life" people up in arms for tampering with that kind of stuff.
The stigma doesn't apply here because, well, nowhere in the phrasing can this be construed as a bad thing.
This is pretty revolutionary, and I really hope it bears fruit for the advancement of stem cell treatments.
No.
Yes. I went there.
To be honest this should remove the controversy surrounding them, since it means you can get stem cells without needing an embryo, so it shouldn't bother the pro lifers any more.
Yes. I went there.
And you are stupid for going there.
I hope this doesnt turn out like the other "stem cell reversal" crap they were trying
So what kind of weak acid are we talking about here, and how weak? 'cause if it's as simple as mixing blood and vinegar in water, then one could in theory make their own batches of stem cells using household ingredients and a basic understanding of chemistry, which would be pretty crazy. I'd guess it'd have to be a pretty dilute acid solution, and you'd probably need to get the blood-vinegar-water ratios just right for optimum cell yield.

If you mess up the isotonicity of your solution, you won't have any stem cells, just a soup of acid and destroyed cells that (a) either shriveled up because the solution was too concentrated or (b) swelled up and exploded because they took in too much water.
Where's your miracles now, Jesus?
Jesus was just an alien with technology perceived as magic
Or there were no miracles
Or he was actually a wizard
well, these theories are more plausible than the leading theory at the very least
Like I said, the amounts of blood, vinegar and water would need to be just right so that the cells would be agitated enough to turn into stem cells but not so much that they die. So I'm guessing that it'd very likely need to be mostly blood in the dish.

Well, he is the son of the Guy who invented stem cells.

While what you say is true; I believe the stigma applies here in the sense that EVERYTHING stem cell related used to have its own amount of controversy on either side, leading to what I said

what the fuck was he doing when he made the platypus
vinegar and water would probably not work; the base beginning would at least have to be normal saline or Ringer's lactate for a proper solution.
At a pinch, you could try the water of a tender coconut, which is as near as damn it close to the actual composition of plasma.

That's great.
Now go over there. Way over there. Close the door. Thanks.
