The Home Office has commissioned a new design, in an attempt to stop glasses being used as weapons. Official figures show 5,500 people are attacked with glasses and bottles every year in England and Wales. The British Beer and Pub Association said it did not want the new plastic glasses to be made compulsory. Neil Williams from the association said he was concerned that drinkers would notice a drop in quality. "For the drinker, the pint glass feels better, it has a nice weight and the drink coats the glass nicely. That's why people go out for a drink, to have a nice experience." He said there was a danger that pubs with no record of trouble would be penalised. He said: "I would ask, is it necessary to replace the much-loved pint glass for safety reasons in the vast majority of pubs where there is no problem? "We've got to make it desirable, acceptable and cool." -Nick Verebelyi, designer of the new pint pot "Pubs shouldn't be put under pressure to stop using glasses if they are safe places to drink. Why on earth ask them to do that? "They shouldn't be corralled into using plastic glasses. Anything that would move us towards a plastic product would not be welcomed." Red tape Mr Williams said the industry feared extra costs at a time when many pubs were struggling in the recession: "It would impose another cost on us. Red tape is already coming from all sides." Nick Verebelyi, the designer in charge of delivering the new pint, said they were looking at two approaches. "One is to coat the glass with a substance that will make sure the glass doesn't shatter into pieces when it is broken - that could be a plastic material for example. THE PINT Dimpled pint glass The 'Nonic' (no nick) glass, with a strengthened bulge an inch from the rim was invented in 1960 It replaced the dimpled pint glass (pictured above) which was too difficult to stack Approximately 126 million pints of beer are served a week in the UK "But it would have to feel like an existing pint glass to the consumer." Mr Verebelyi said his company, Design Bridge, was also looking at changing the pint altogether. "We could do something more radical, by looking at the whole shape and substance of the pint - we could come up with something that is completely different to glass. "Remember that years ago people used to drink out of pewter tankards. It could be quite a significant paradigm shift." Mr Verebelyi said he accepted that drinkers are attached to the traditional glass pint. "You make a change and there is often opposition, we've got to make it appealing to them. We've got to make it desirable and acceptable and cool. "There's going to be quite a push behind this in terms of the Home Office." The Home Office Minister, Alan Campbell, said the redesign could make a significant difference to the number of revellers who are injured. He said: "Innovative design has played an important role in driving down overall crime, including theft, fraud and burglary. "This project will see those same skills applied to the dangerous and costly issue of alcohol-related crime and I am confident that it will lead to similar successes."
Source Oh no, you might cut yourself on the glass drinking receptacles BAN THEM NOW Why does the UK feel the need to ban everything that's considered even remotely hazardous?
It's not the governments damn business what people drink from. By that logic cars should be mandated to be made out of Styrofoam.
It's less that you might cut yourself and more that some chav might get drunk off his ass and slam the bottom of his pint glass into your face.
oh wow
Ban Cancer, that's hazardous.
It's less that you might cut yourself and more that some chav might get drunk off his ass and slam the bottom of his pint glass into your face.
Granted, but this is a little extreme, no?
It's less that you might cut yourself and more that some chav might get drunk off his ass and slam the bottom of his pint glass into your face.
So? He'll do the same thing with a plastic container. Please, tell me you don't support this.
Idiotic. People making bad decisions out of fear.
Idiotic. People making bad decisions out of fear.
There should be legal precautions against that sort of thing, like a fine for making a law that unnecessarily strips people of rights/convenience.
So? He'll do the same thing with a plastic container. Please, tell me you don't support this.
A plastic container would leave a bruise, nothing more. If he does it with a glass container, though, nine times out of ten it will break and pretty much fuck your face in half. I don't support it, in fact I have no opinion since I don't live in the UK, but I do see their logic.
we've gone this far... i think we'll live. besides, its your own damn fault.
UK banning everything in sight, what's not new?
They should make it so that these glasses are only mandatory when you're serving someone who has had 5 or more pints, since they'll be too drunk to give a shit.
Sure also ban cars, drunks can run over, ban knives, you know they are dangerous, ban everything.
The people who bring these ideas forward are the people who don't have any experience with the thing they're trying to ban.
The people who bring these ideas forward are the people who don't have any experience with the thing they're trying to ban.
Welcome to politics.
Most nightclubs already use plastic glasses, as do many inner-city pubs. They do this for a reason: 1) Plastic glasses don't break when you drop them 2) People in Britian (mainly chavs and gangstas) do hit each other in the face with normal glasses and bottles. But it shouldn't be compulsory for places that have no reported incidents (although maybe a rule for places open to a certain time in set areas).
People in Britian (mainly chavs and gangstas) do hit each other in the face with normal glasses and bottles.
As Jim Jeffries once said: 'The British really aren't responsible enough to drink out of glasses; we're the only country that uses "glass" as a verb.'
This isn't stupid. People get drunk, people get angry, and people hit other people with glasses. But I agree that glasses in pubs shouldn't be completely banned. Perhaps just restricted in certain places/times. I don't think they should be replaced by disposable plastic cups, either.
Ban pubs, they cause trouble.
So they're going to ignore the figure of 51 million citizens inhabiting England alone? 5,500 isn't shit compared to that.
As Jim Jeffries once said: 'The British really aren't responsible enough to drink out of glasses; we're the only country that uses "glass" as a verb.'
Australia does too

I went to this night club once were they served all their alcohol in plastic cups. I felt like a fucking kid, I bought bottled drinks for the rest of the night.
The government shouldn't even be worrying about these things. what
Nanny state bullshit, yet again. I wouldn't be suprised if none of them have ever been in a bar.
And the UK descends further into a combination nanny/police state. Tomorrow: CCTV cameras placed into public toilets with built-in microphones to yell at people who don't wipe their asses after taking a shit.
Nuts to that, imagine how fast your pint will get warm. warm drinks are no good.
Nuts to that, imagine how fast your pint will get warm. warm drinks are no good.
Well you wouldn't want a warm beer would you?
Nuts to that, imagine how fast your pint will get warm. warm drinks are no good.
'sept in the UK, we drink our Pints warm.
STOP MAKING THESE DESCISIONS YOU RETARDED GOVERNMENT We are turning into australia, banning everything because of the sake of a few people/accidents, it's a moronic outlook on every single problem. Glass bottles hold carbonation better than plastic, this will mean peoples drinks will go flat and they will have to waste more money on pointless expenditures. Let people do what they want, focus on getting our economy back and then you can tell me what is right to do.
