The longest covered bridge in Asia has been destroyed after a fire roared through the wooden structure last night.
The Feng Yu Covered Bridge, in Chongqing, China, is known throughout the Far East for its traditional beauty topped by a pagoda-style roof that stretched 303 metres across the region's Apeng River.
But last night the five-metre-wide crossing, first built in 1591, collapsed into the waters as the blaze turned it to ashes.

:( all that history
All good things end eventually, it's a fact I'm going to have to face as an Archeologist. Not everything old will be preserved forever :(
great news for the 2nd longest bridge
It's going to be a real shame if it turns out to be Arson.
Man, that bridge was cool as hell too.
Hope they rebuild it. It wont have the same history, but still.
i bet they put up a concrete monstrosity and say progress
It's going to be a real shame if it turns out to be Arson.
It'll probably be something trivial, like a guy who didn't stamp out his cigarette all the way.
That was a very nice bridge, architecturally speaking. Shame to see it go.
It's a damn shame to see old structures like this fall, so much craftsmanship and history all lost in one fell swoop.
Dayum shame, mayun.
probably the fucking mongols again
i bet they put up a concrete monstrosity and say progress
well it would be progress. Concrete and metal bridges have a 100% less chance of burning down
probably the fucking mongols again
Idiot, water wasting silkfarmers. Who needs bridges anyway? All you need is a ford and a good horse.
probably the fucking mongols again
how did you know :tinfoil:
That was a very pretty bridge, shame it had to burn.
That thing is gorgeous and it's a loss that it's burned down.
Think of how many feet must have trod on that stone..
chong ching... what a great name for a city.. i would live there just to say i'm from chong ching.

This entire article is misleading. A BRIDGE was built at this location in 1591. The current bridge which burned down was built in 1999. China did not lose some major historical bridge, it lost a 14 year old replica.

Figured as much when they said "first built in 1591" and saw that it had concrete supports.

china knows their stuff when it comes to replicating original material
It'll be rebuilt anyway, so I don't see the problem to be honest
It'll be rebuilt anyway, so I don't see the problem to be honest
perhaps the problem is a bridge burned down
I didn't even know it existed, and it turns out it was one of the most awesome bridges I have ever seen.
Shame.
Real shame. In Indiana we have lots of covered bridges around and we had a couple of them burned down because of arson.

How did I even miss that fact?
How did I even miss that fact?
I thought they were stone when I saw them.
Man, that bridge was cool as hell too.

It has probably been rebuild 4-5 times already anyway. The fact you repair something won't change the its history.
