A powerful explosion and sounds of heavy fighting have been reported in Chechnya’s capital of Grozny, according to sources on Twitter and some media outlets in the region.
Multiple sources on Twitter are reporting that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s motorcade has been seen pulling into the Kremlin in the middle of the night, around the time the unrest unfolded in Grozny.
Unconfirmed sources are pointing to the presense of Islamist militants in the city.
"Quick, while Putin's busy with Ukraine, let's revolt again!"
fuck it, the world's burning for what, the 153rd time this year?
I wonder if this is going to turn out to be a bunch of Chechen ISIS wannabes.

I don't think the planet would survive that much awesome. (it'd also never happen, but one can dream)
You're not completely wrong. Islamists in general have made an enemy in the US, Russia, China, the EU, and the dictatorships of the Middle East.
We all don't like each other. No one's teaming up.
Featuring T-72 tanks that aren't exploding when they encounter M1A1s.
Abrams and T-90s rolling across the middle east while Havocs and Apaches fly formation over head supported by Migs and F-15s, god damn I have an erection

You'd be surprised. Chechen Islamists already have an extremely strong presence in many Islamic terrorist/militant groups, and ISIS is no exception. At least one of ISIS' top commanders is Chechen. Al Qaeda was operating in Chechnya a decade or more before most people in the West learned about them after 9/11. So if anything, ISIS fighters are Chechen wannabes, and have been for a long time.

Well I don't mean to use an anecdote as proof but there's definitely been a lack of armed fighting within my immediate vicinity this year.
So, there.
Man, if the Russians were forced to cut support to the Ukrainian separatists because of this, that'd be a fantastic side-effect of a terrible situation.
I doubt it's ISIS related Chechnya yearly always has events like this, this one is just a bit larger.
Apparently a couple dozen militants blitzed a checkpoint, killed a handful of police officers and now are held up in the Press Offices in Grozny. There's pictures of BTRs in the streets and Russians pummeling the occupied building with rounds.
Putin beat the living shit out of the insurgency, but that doesn't mean the insurgency is dead. It is just more covert and underground.

Why would either of these things be related in anyway?
Tracer fire either entering the building or exiting I can't tell.

I'd imagine entering. You probably wouldn't want to draw attention to your specific location in a building with fucking tracers if you were firing out.
Well everyone can calm down now, all bad guys in the buiding are dead (total 7), apparently prior to that there was car cahse that ended up with terrorist getting surrounded in this building.
3 cops are dead sadly, rip.

Any more backstory to it?
Were they gangsters or terrorists?

In Chechnya they are practically the same? I mean any kind of "gangster" or criminal activity WILL have something related to some militia groups out there.

Well I mean like:
Mafia
local tribal/family gangster
Islamist militant either native or international brigade
I guess they are very similar but secular/religious and for family/for gang would be the dividers.
also
the leader of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, announced on his Instagram page Thursday.
Announced on Instagram?

Mafia is absent as opposing force since Kadyrov has full grip on region supported by goverment, he is mafia, except official and sliiiiightly restricted to prevent controversy (his past alone is aready enough)
Local tribal/family, abscent for same reason, taken care of long time ago.
I'd say it's yet another international brigade, they pop up once in a while trying to establish themselfs in region only to be corked out soon after.
As for Instagram:
Well what do you expect? We live in a world where instead of official press statements politicians use social networks to deliver most if not any of their reports, wich is a bad thing ofcourse. Plenty of examples starting with Ukraine and ending with pretty much fucking everywhere where someone is too lazy to give out official statement
