Cara Delevingne has slammed comic book movies for being “totally sexist” ahead of her role in Warner Bros and DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad’. “There are only three girls in ['Suicide Squad’] but in my opinion they have the best roles,” she said. “Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist. "Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No-one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute.” Delevingne also talked about her role as Enchantress in David Ayer’s 'Suicide Squad’ and her ability to control minds. Asked if that’s the ultimate superpower, the actress said: “No, I think I’d rather be able to anybody or anything, I guess. "That’s kind of the ultimate acting superpower, and of course that’s like Mystique in 'X-Men’, but as well I’d like to be a tree if I wanted to, or a paper clip.”
Source. Her comments about Wonder Woman gives me the feeling she doesn't keep up with comics.
Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No-one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? Well, she's not wrong. But that Wonder Woman comment is dumb and made from a complete lack of research. Being an Amazonian practically makes Wonder Woman a demi-god (well, she's literally a demi-god in the New 52 canon), she doesn't even need her bracers to block bullets, her skin does that for itself. Sure, the normal star-spangled underpants outfit is dumb, but that'd be why most modern artists stick Diana in a getup that is more fitting of the Greek mythology that so deeply inspires the Wonder Woman stories.
I'm so sick of these uninformed actors using feminist issues to expand their fame. Most super heros are literally sterotypes, just look at Captain America who is the perfect image of a American solider during wartime.
I saw this before and I'm going to say the same thing I said back then What fucking superhero movies is she watching? Comics, arguably yes but movies? Not really
Eh. Catwoman, Supergirl, Black Widow in Avengers. They do tend to have female superheroes dressed either like tramps or portrayed as completely vapid. I'd love to see a She-Hulk movie where She-Hulk actually snaps and goes true Hulk-mode and just beats the living shit out of someone. But they'd probably never let that happen. Obviously we need to make Wonder Woman look better in comparison by bringing back her fat sidekick: [t]http://36.media.tumblr.com/d239971160688460cd11fb54b63d4439/tumblr_mrw82rcLCE1r24hxpo1_1280.png[/t]

These two characters and skin tight clothing, and one of them is in a position where you can see his bulge. [t]http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/11111/111111435/3445290-2485086653-9038-.jpg[/t] [t]http://spiderman.erictoribio.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/01-_Torment_-Part-1_.jpg[/t]
I thin personally we'll see She Hulk in a Netflix Marvel show, sorta like how we have Daredevil and Punisher
Should I want a character like that? Because I kinda do.
Personally I think all superheroes should yell "Woo Woo!" at least twice per page.
If she thinks that's sexist, wait until she finds out she's a thin white fashion model perpetuating thin privilege and sexual objectification of women.

I can't wait to hear her opinion on hyper-buff Thor and Captain America.

Women are free to clothe however they want, but as soon as you portray them in revealing clothing, you're a sexist? I swear I'll never understand this logic. I'd agree if they broadly depicted women being weak and helpless across many comics, because that'd be sexist. But this is the opposite. Comic book heroines can kick ass even without having to wear complete body armor, and it's not like most male heros are any more protected with their thin spandex suits...
I saw this before and I'm going to say the same thing I said back then What superhero movie is she watching? Comics, arguably yes but movies? Not really
IMO part of it is kind of like the Bechdel test thing. Most superhero movies aren't particularly sexist (like, there are undertones, like most female characters too often being e.g. side characters like love interests rather than active participants in the stories), but Hollywood rarely greenlights movies centered around female heroes. Like, Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Captain America get their own movies, but e.g. Black Widow doesn't.
I can't wait to hear her opinion on hyper-buff Thor and Captain America.
A bit off-topic but I liked how in the Netflix Daredevil series that Murdock's vigilante character didn't go for the big, bulging muscles thing unlike those other Marvel superheroes. I also liked how they kept with the 'everyman' kind of suit (as in it could have been almost anyone in the suit, not just someone with heaps of money able to afford a super-experimental suit) until the very last episode.
People who complain about how super heroes are objectifying women should probably get a fucking grip and realize men are also idealized as fuck in comic books, given the fact they're literally drawn naked then a skintight suit is painted on top of them.

A lot of male superheroes *are* drawn that way, like, just going off the Batman comparison, Nightwing.

I might be in the minority here, but it's really just a character design to me, and that's it.
Is that really true though? A lot of male superheroes *are* drawn that way, like, just going off the Batman comparison, Nightwing.
Yeah but everyone has the hots for Dick.

Plenty of men are perfectly fine with that kind of thing, just look at jojo's bizarre adventure. [thumb]http://i31.mangareader.net/jojos-bizarre-adventure-part-5-vento-aureo/1/jojos-bizarre-adventure-part-5-vento-aureo-1703273.jpg[/thumb] If you said you didn't want to read it because the character designs make you feel uncomfortable people would tell you to get over yourself. This argument is absolute nonsense and it comes from the erroneous assumption that everyone is as uncomfortable with sexuality as this woman is.
My favorite version of that comic is the one where the resulting sketch is replaced by Terry Mcginnis. You know. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/cwY4EUq.jpg[/thumb] Terry Mcginnis. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/eTF55Yk.gif[/thumb]
You do realize that the bulges/half naked/completely naked superhero guys are NOT sexualized, right? That's because 75>% of the people who make these are straight men. The problem is that women in superhero comics and films are very sexualized which happens all the time. [editline]28th June 2015[/editline] Like, for fuck sakes people, when these comics are drawn, the creator isn't thinking "my mostly straight male demographic is totally gonna be attracted to the large batman bulge I just made!"
A comic I've seen that I feel explains the argument better than I can: [t]http://www.shortpacked.com/comics/2011-12-02-sexy.png[/t]
See, it's a good point, but it's equally lost because not all men want to be huge buff dudes and some women do in fact want to be sexy and revealing. You can say that it's based upon number, and that more dudes want to be buff musclecrabs than there are women who want to be all-boobs cancerballs. But both are a case of culture focus, where both of those problems are only inherently problematic if they are not proportionate to the people who consume the product. There is a problem, and it is shown because most of the comic consumers, are indisputably male, so giant boobs sell better. But in this case, the change for the better is really something that has to be done by both consumers and producers, since producers are not going to create something that is not going to sell, and consumers are not going to get something that they don't enjoy. Hell, to throw in personal experience, I tend to dislike muscled as hell Batman from general series, but the Batman Forever iteration is great, because much like this comic, it's based around dexterous Batman, rather than punchman with cape and tights. It's far too easy to generalize, but I haven't really seen anyone pick out specific problems too well, without falling down to Cherry Picking. Nothing is ever simpler, and the discussion is worth continuing just for the hope of finding the actual damn problem.

Not that that is a bad thing at all. Hell, Superman stems all the way back to the 1930's, and you can still tell even today. He's a very 30's man.
