Captain Kirk takes the USS Enterprise out of Drydock
On his Facebook page Takei posted a link to the story with the caption: “The name of the captain of this new Zumwalt-class destroyer (the latest guided missile vessel to be deployed by the U.S. Navy) is…wait for it…James Kirk. Truly epic..”
The USS Zumwalt launched last week in Maine and not only does it feature a space-age look, the 610-foot vessel has the best captain’s name of all-time.
James Kirk was commissioned at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1990 and has served in various posts as a “surface warfare officer.” His official bio says “Ashore, Captain Kirk has served as Executive Assistant to the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs and as an Action Officer on the Joint Staff.”
James Kirk will command a warship that features various new technologies including “radar reflecting angles and a striking inward-sloping tumblehome hull.” The warship also features an advanced gun system.
The Navy is still working on the Zumwalt which is “more than 87 percent complete.” Before the ship is battle ready the Navy will complete some hull work and then delivery the USS Zulwalt in late 2014.
How does it work? Does it just cut enemy ships in half?
But the enterprise wasn't a warship... D: This one is gonna go around blowing shit up and destroying the lives of millions! D:
He's right guys, the USS Enterprise was obviously a cruise ship owned by Carnival cruise.
Going to be interesting to see how the tumblehome performs in the real world.

Don't rock the boat, rock the boat baby.
How does it work? Does it just cut enemy ships in half?
Giant electro magnets in the bow of the ship help accelerate it into the side of a enemy ship for a clean cut.

whenever I see that boat, a huge submarine comes to mind.
I wonder what the polycount for these are going to be in future videogames

1. The Enterprise is relatively famous for BEING a warship
2. Destroying the lives of millions? If one destroyer could do that they wouldn't have built this one :v:

No doubt it would be tessellated out the ass, they'll be the smoothest flattest polygons we've ever seen.

When I was eight years old I doodled planes that looked a lot like that, only they were only edgy and sharp like that if they were stealth bombers, otherwise they had very rounded edges. And wings, of course.
Imma sue, brb getting megarich, gold membership for all if I'm successful. :v:
For anyone wondering about the advanced gun system like I was, you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Gun_System
Basically, its got a bigass turret that can hide within the hull of the ship when not in use and can fire 155mm shells at 10 rpm up to 83 nautical miles away (95.5 miles) with a circular error probability of 50 m (160 ft) or less. This equates to the firepower of close to 6 155mm howitzers on the ground.
To sum things up

it's so flat you could make it a sprite and no one would notice

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the Starship Enterprise, in the Star Trek universe. In that universe, where it's captained (mostly) by James T. Kirk, it's an exploration vessel.

Holy shit, are they firing M107's? Those things have like 5 (or six, I forget exactly) kg of TNT in them. This gun can put down the explosive damage of 60 kgs of TNT per minute. That's like....enough to level 2 or three residential buildings in a minute. From a 150 km away.
Bloody hell that's terrifying.
