even if they weren't, I don't see how they can "accept the woman's claim the auction was a joke" and still think there were potential threats to the children's wellbeing

How do they know which bids are real and which ones are jokes?
Wooow, I'd just like to note how late these guys are. It makes the news and people care, but its been a problem on eBay for a while. Tons of people make fake auctions to sell children, husbands/wifes, parents-in-law, etc.
Well, if it was a joke or not, tons of people have done it before, and tons will do it after. At least eBay report em and remove them pretty quickly ^^
