I don't think a video classifies as news post and source.
Pretty shit, India, though.
Your title suggests stuff like this doesn't happen all the time. Have you ever been to India? It's not entirely safe for anyone, really.
Always a bus for some reason.
Sounds like the phrase "rape train" is outdated now.
Are they going to report every single rape in this country of 1.2 billion?

It does

Interesting there's no proportionate amount of news articles on Facepunch of such things happening in Western countries - Especially considering rape is statistically more common in the USA.

I have, actually. And it's perfectly safe, if you don't take unnecessary/foolish risks.

Yeah in the US alone there is roughly a sexual assault every two minutes.

Study results.
Great, people get sexually assaulted in India. According to studies, many more people get sexually assaulted in the USA than in India, but for some reason, we're seeing the incidents in India represented in news today more often, especially where a foreigner is involved.
Not saying there isn't a problem.
I'm saying the pattern of reporting is some crypto-racist bullshit.
Yeah in the US alone there is roughly a sexual assault every two minutes.
Yes lets think of how often a society that has been known to throw acid/burn women and threaten them reports rape and sexual assault statistics.
Yes lets think of how often a society that has been known to throw acid/burn women and threaten them reports rape and sexual assault statistics.
Because throwing acid at women is a common social practice across all of India and isn't something that happened in a few isolated incidents. Because a few criminals are representative of one point two billion people, a seventh of the world's population.

I suppose that means every American who owns a gun shoots babies for money, or at least that it's a common cultural practice in the USA, hmm? You disgust me.
1500 people every year are victims of acid attacks. around the world Around 70% of those are women. 262 people in India were the victim of acid throwing in 2002, out of a population of 1.2 billion. Roughly 3000 total attacks since 1999 in India. Out of a population of 1.2 billion.
Percentage?
0.0000025.
Let's look at your post again.
"a society that has been known to throw acid/burn women"
You need to get out more often, and do some deep introspection while you're about it to drop those racist tendencies.
Human Rights India:
“every 60 minutes two women are raped, and every six hours a young married woman is found beaten to death, burnt or driven to suicide.”
"Figures for rape are often under-reported in India due to social stigma" ~BBC
"In 1999, only 28% of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement
officials – fewer than one in three" ~Your own article (speaking about United States, applicable to other areas around the world)"
"In India’s modernizing but still deeply traditional society, social and women’s rights activists say rapes occur with virtual impunity, and women who betray flickers of independent thought and challenge the male-dominated status quo are especially vulnerable." ~Washington Post
“This is an unequal society. Boys can do what they want,” said Jagmati Sangwan of the All India Democratic Women’s Association. “Honor is for girls only, and they pay such a high price for that.” ~WP/AIDWA
"Pay is poor and opportunities for advancement are rare, leaving many police officers dependent on bribes to support their families. People without money or political connections are often ignored.
In the latest official move to deter further such attacks, the Delhi police announced late last week that constables would be stationed nightly at 300 bus stops around the city. The problem with this plan is that many women say the presence of police officers makes them feel less safe, not more.
The treatment of women by the police is such a concern that laws now forbid officers to arrest or even bring women in for questioning during nighttime hours. In case after case, the police have used their powers to deliver abused women into the hands of their abusers." ~NY Times
Stop throwing around "racist" like a buzzword please.

Read it, jackass.
Let me bold this part for you, so it sinks in.
"If police officials in India fail to take rape survivors seriously, American law enforcement is not so far behind. The Federal Bureau of Investigation crime data reveals only 24 percent of reported rapes result in an arrest in the United States, a rate far below that of other violent crimes such as murder (79 percent) and aggravated assault (51 percent). These statistics show that our own country displays hostility towards women that is similar to India."
A billion people, hot weather, rampant industrialization, cultural upheaval and a traditional culture that views women as objects.... Rape rates are inevitably going to be high.

india is exponentially worse than the united states in the way it treats women, to deny this would be doing women and the women's rights movement an incredible injustice dude

It has perfectly safe and beautiful sights, I've been there on multiple occassions. I have lots of family there too. These rape articles you're hearing about all the time and that are being posted here is just as commonly reported there as rape is here.. meaning it's only going noticed here because lately Western media has decided to focus on it more, and of course it is affecting foreigners.

I cannot deny there is a lot of bad treatment that occurs towards women in India, but like many third world countries there are good area's and there are bad area's.
Go to Punjab, that's where my family is from. You won't find anything like that there, and girls are treated pretty well.
i dont want to stereotype india because its a really cool place but i think its extraordinarily cruel to dismiss serious issues like the abuse of women by saying it's just the western media focusing on something or that its just racism or xenophobia
Go to Punjab, that's where my family is from. You won't find anything like that there, and girls are treated pretty well.
considering rape and domestic abuse are terribly under-reported in punjab, and women barely hold leadership positions there i cant really see how its much better than the rest of india

of course you would know right, because you have totally spent time there and have family there.
honestly don't believe everything the media reports and what you read. I'm not saying punjab is perfect for women, but as compared to the area's where these rapes are occuring (majority in north india etc) punjab is day and night in comparison.
[editline]27th March 2013[/editline]
and I'm not dismissing anything, I'm saying these serious issues are unjustly being focused on only one country ever since that first rape incident on the bus occurred. People are jumping on some sort of bandwagon that India is suddenly this central shithole for women in Asia to get raped and domestically abused, when it's easily probably one of the better places for women to be living in, at least compared to any other nearby countries.
I have no idea why anyone would want to visit such a shit hole of a country.
I visited India a couple of years ago and it was absolutely amazing, such a beautiful country.
But I'm a white male from a first world nation so I probably didn't get the full picture.

punjab? punjab is probably one of the biggest hotspots of forced marriage and human trafficking in the whole of india
the cities in indai are a lot better than the countryside, if you want to visit india don't try and stray from the tourist spots and trails please or bad things will happen to you (and probably your nose and eyes too, outside of the tourist areas india is very ugly)
The inherent anti-women attiude in india is hidden behind the veil of vande matram and hindu mata, this veil of mother worship isn't going to hide the ugly truth for much longer

punjab is in the north of india??? i am going to believe what i read and what the media reports because i have no reason not to. no-one benefits from making up stories about women's rape.
People are jumping on some sort of bandwagon that India is suddenly this central shithole for women in Asia to get raped and domestically abused
yeah thats good. people should be angry about it. the more everyone knows the more likely itll be changed.
when it's easily probably one of the better places for women to be living in, at least compared to any other nearby countries.
thats completely false. its worse than nearby countries. its rated by several human rights organizations to be one of the absolutely worst countries with a modern economy for women.
stop trying to weasel around with this. its fucking disgusting
What do I have to weasel around? I'm not protecting India, I'm protecting the notion that idiots like you make the entire country sound like women abusing rapists, and a total shit hole. I don't appreciate you bashing Punjab where generations of friends and family I know have come from.
Honestly if you don't have any experience yourself don't pretend like you know what you're talking about. It's not like I have to defend myself either, I was born and raised in Canada. I just don't appreciate your nonsensical bashing on a place you really don't know anything about, and it'd be cool if you didn't pretend like you did just because you googled something or read it off the internet.

dude im totally fine with you calling me an idiot for pointing out that rape and domestic violence is unreported and that women barely hold positions of power; more power to you
its a country with problems just like any other country, pointing out those problems is not a bad thing

this is really simple
go on the internet and research the plight of women in india, buy a couple of books even, and you'll get an understanding of what its like for them there
do you disagree with the notion that women have it bad in india? if you do then post some reasoning or rationale for it, educate me on the subject
otherwise dont post because i really dont care for your antagonistic posting; sorry

and what I keep repeating is I actually go to India, have lived 3-4 months out of the year there multiple times, lived with family and I see how life is there, atleast in PUNJAB
what is your definition of women having it bad in india? if you think women are constantly domestically abused and raped or something in their households, then yes you are wrong and I disagree because I have lived with a lot of different relatives no household is like this. Women are highly respected in most cases, there are abusive husbands, just like there are in any country in the world of course.
Do you think women aren't entitled to education or anything? Daughters are sent to university, encouraged to get a degree and jobs if they wish. There is pressure to get married, but in the last decade or so it no longer exists, many parts of India have become more modernized then you think.
Of course you wouldn't know, you just read the opinions of foreigners with no real first hand experience on the internet, then copy and paste it for your arguments, much like they probably did. An endless cycle of misleading information, if you will.
[editline]28th March 2013[/editline]
It's funny because I took a first year Anthropology course as an elective when I was a freshman, and in that course one of the required readings was on a book about how 'white lies' are formed and presumed in the West, leading to misinterpretations of other cultures. You're looking like a really good example of those people that have presumptions based off information you read yet no first hand experience.

no i didnt claim any of that

women have it bad in india because all reputable human rights groups say so?

I'm beginning to think you haven't taken anything I've said with even a little bit of thought
tired of getting trolled, you win, my entire family and friends and everyone I know are rapists and abus e women. Statistically I can only come to the conclusion I will suffer the same fate
I apologize for being Indian and from Punjab you win thisispain :(
yeah im trolling you even though you've called me an idiot, insulted me for shit i didnt even say, and had the nerve to insinuate that i was a racist and wanted to make you apologize for being indian and from punjab
