If a cure is really that effective the company is going to price it appropriately, that's sort of the point of a patent system. Not to mention an effective cure would likely outcompete existing 'lifetime treatments' and automatically be more profitable.

Price is also a big issue. There exist cures for diseases that never got off the ground because they were too expensive to produce or fine-tune. I remember reading about a potential herpes cure that was stopped because the developer ran out of funding.

If a company tried to bury something that was actually passing clinical trials, they wouldn't stand by idly. No one goes into Science to get rich, let me tell you, which is probably why it is filled with idealists and other left-leaning types. (The left-wing bias of academia being well studied)

No secretary has overheard conversations? No altruistic executive who is disgusted with what shes seeing?

I'm fairly sure that alot of the antiretrovirals are off patent now. Even if they weren't, Like ilikecorn said, an effective anti-HIV vaccine would blow all other competitors out of the market. Pretty sure that a company isn't going to risk another company developing their own vaccine just so they might squeeze out more of their patent-life of an ART.
