More than half of all Americans believe that God rewards athletes who have faith in him, according to a recent poll by the Public Religion Research Institute. That number is 53 percent, and isn’t really that shocking.According to the poll, 27 percent of Americans believe that God actually plays a role in determining which team wins a sporting event. The poll, conducted on Jan. 16, consisted of random telephone interviews with 1,033 subjects. The percentage jumps even higher if you’re a white evangelical Protestant from the South.

Roughly 4-in-10 minority Christians (40%) and white evangelical Protestants (38%) agree that God does play a role in the outcome of a sporting event, compared to less than 3-in-10 (29%) Catholics, less than 1-in-5 (19%) white mainline Protestants, and approximately 1-in-10 (12%) religiously unaffiliated Americans. More than one-third (36%) of Americans who live in the South agree that God plays a role in determining which team wins a sporting event, compared to nearly 3-in-10 (28%) Americans who live in the Midwest, 1-in-5 (20%) Americans who live in the Northeast, and 15% of Americans who live in the West.

That low percentage for the West is not surprising: that’s where Chargers and Raiders fans live. But Democrats (28 percent) are slightly more likely to think that God is manipulating box scores than Republicans (25 percent) or independents (26 percent). And try this on for size:

More than three-quarters (76%) of Americans agree that public high schools should be allowed to sponsor prayer before football games.
http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2013/01/31/one-in-four-americans-think-god-helps-decide-the-outcome-of-football-games/
They're right, I've been making a killing at the booky since I started praying to Satan.
Not to spark a religious debate, but I'm really baffled why a deity would find reason to help a game of sportsball that doesn't really affect the world in the slightest.
of course his name is John Madden
You think all the modern Gods from the major religions argue over their favorite teams?
Not to spark a religious debate, but I'm really baffled why a deity would find reason to help a game of sportsball that doesn't really affect the world in the slightest.
This. Pretty sure that if God existed, he'd have bigger things to concern himself with in the midst of all this than who wins a football game here on this one tiny planet in our insignificant little corner of our galaxy. Fun as it is to believe otherwise, I'm fairly certain we aren't that special.
If your fans believe it takes an act of God for your team to win a game, then you've got a lousy fanbase.
You think all the modern Gods from the major religions argue over their favorite teams?
Seeing as Christianity and Islam both derive from Judaism, the god of all three of those religions is the same (Yahweh).
I wonder if it works with Counter-Strike, as well

Yeah, but let's face it, just about any poll will show that 25% of America is fucking retarded. Like, at least 25%.
Yeah, but let's face it, just about any poll will show that 25% of America is fucking retarded. Like, at least 25%.
Did you know that half of Americans are dumber than the average American?
Not to spark a religious debate, but I'm really baffled why a deity would find reason to help a game of sportsball that doesn't really affect the world in the slightest.
How do you not spark a religious debate with this as discussion material?
if i was a christian i'd be offended that this guy is acting like he's so devout and pious just to get fame. might as well walk around with a fucking wooden cross on his back
I'm not particularly offended.
Now before we start calling Americans idiots or something along that line (Oh wait Used Car Salesman already did...), we should probably take into account that this poll asked 1000 people. By telephone. Saying something like "1/4th of all -large group of people- think -idea-." and basing said claim off of 1000 people is like taking 10 pieces of gravel from one spot in a large pile, finding ~4 of them to look similar, then claiming "1 in 4 pieces of gravel are identical". Absolutely ridiculous.
John Madden
BRETT FAVRE
I don't see the problem. Some people prayer for a cure for cancer, some people prayer for a good football game. If anything this explains why so many people in Buffalo seem to be atheist, we lost four superbowl games consecutively :v:
i summon our divine lord, madden
If your fans believe it takes an act of God for your team to win a game, then you've got a lousy fanbase.
Its also insulting as hell to the teams. Basically says all the hard work they do practicing and such is because of god rather than themselves.
Sorry starving children, homeless people, victims of hate crimes, the handicapped, the depressed, etc., god is too busy watching the Superbowl to help you. Right because in a world where people die and suffer everyday the thing God will mostly care about is whether you win a football game, ok. This reminded me of this Euphoric
Not surprised. Some of the die hard sports fans I've met are very superstitious when it comes to sports. My friend is an atheist and so is his family but when the vikings play, they have an offering of round objects in front of the TV and if someone goes to take a shit and they score, that person is not allowed to come back into the room
They gotta make up for all those missed services by praying during the game.
of course his name is John Madden
Madden football has correctly predicted 8 out of the last 10 super bowls. All hail John Madden
Sorry starving children, homeless people, victims of hate crimes, the handicapped, the depressed, etc., god is too busy watching the Superbowl to help you.
but my god is all powerful! PROOF: look at me, im alive and well. get rekt atheists.
You think all the modern Gods from the major religions argue over their favorite teams?
Zeus must be bummed.
Giving the fact Auburn pulled off two of the best college football wins this season in back to back games against big rivals and adding on the most impossible ways to win it. No shit God and Jesus are football fans.
i summon our divine lord, madden
That sound combined with that face, I think I just had a heartattack
