Too bad this way of modding won't ever work, because of incompatibilities and Minecraft updates.
Jesus christ Notch is anal about modding. Why can't he just open up what needs to be opened up and be done with it?
Due to feedback we have updated the MOD API cost to 0 Dollars.

maybe...that's the whole point....O_O

That is just a given though for almost any game. If I were a developer, I wouldn't care at all for the modding community, especially if the game is a WIP, and +10% if they can't deal with updating their mods. If I need to make a change or fix to my game to make it better at the cost of breaking all the mods for it, then so be it. I won't sacrifice gain just because a handful of people can't be arsed to fix their mod.

Exactly. I'll never understand why so many people feel like they're entitled to support from the developers for every single specific mod. Mods are just that: modifications. They are not part of the original game and whether or not they improve the experience or belong there is not up to the developers, whose only job is to make the game great and sell more copies. It's not the developers' job to make sure every mod works throughout each update and they are not required to provide tools and source code access.
...which is exactly what Notch is doing now, despite not having to at all. I think it's great that he is, and I can't believe some people are actually complaining about it (not in this thread specifically; apparently Notch's Twitter was slammed with flaming hate messages shortly after that blog post). I also think it's great that he intends to buy up some of the best community mods for actual in-game inclusion; he's basically doing it Valve's way now, and that's awesome. I always see people complain about how the modding community has done more positive work on Minecraft than Notch himself has in the past year and that Minecraft should just be handed over to the community, so now hopefully those whiners will finally get their wish.
If made right, this game wouldn't need the limitations of "I updated the game, now everyone remake all your mods". Hell, if made right it shouldn't even need that "sign up to be an exclusive member of the mod making team!". This isn't an API, this is just open sourcing the game to select people. But I guess asking for a game to be made right is part of my entitlement issues I cry over every night according to you people.

So you're saying if a developer doesn't take the time to make sure that every community mod still works through each update that it's 'made wrong'? :raise:

I'm saying if he's not making real mod tools and calling them mod tools, it's made wrong.

Oh, he didn't call it mod tools, I did. And I was just generally speaking for all developers, but I guess I did say "that's what Notch is doing" after that, so my mistake. v:v:v
I think it'd be cool for Minecraft to have a community development feel to it.

I find it strange that Notch sees Garry's Mod as an inspiration, yet doesn't acknowledge how successful its modding system is.

Notch also wants to become Valve but rejects an offer to work at Valve.
Doesn't surprise me at all.
Mod developers can download the source code from our SVN repository.
This is pretty impressive, it looks like Notch is giving developers a lot of free roam. Just inviting them into the project with open arms. Most games don't do this; Garry's mod for example.
Yeah, like Overv mentioned, the problem with open source modding is that when Minecraft updates, everyone has to update their mods again and merge the implementations.
In Garry's Mod we get a ton of hooks and functions, which might give us a little less power, but also guarantees that the engine and addons are separate. That way when the engine updates, our addons don't require updating (or in border cases, don't require much work to update).
But in the end someone might make a plugin interface just like that using the source, allowing for people to simply make plugins like they do now with Bukkit. That way only that mod will have to be updated and not everyone stuff.

Most games with mods also allow the public to mod the game. Good luck getting through to notch to become an official modder.
Is it just me, or does it seem like notch wants the modders to finish the game for him?

Maybe there's a good reason for it?
I'm pretty sure they'll end up setting up a system that notifies mod developers of changes so that fixes to mods can be done before the update is out.
