Russian Paratrooper Describes Fighting in Ukraine in Leaked Transcripts
Members of an elite Russian paratroop force talked about the brutal battle near Luhansk, a city in eastern Ukraine, in telephone transcripts leaked to politician and newspaper publisher Lev Shlosberg.
“We’re f——g walking along looking for these f—–g Ukrainians,” one paratrooper says in an account reported by the Sunday Times of London.
“We get out into the open and are seen, kapow!” the paratrooper says.
“We dashed out onto the road, there was a field, sunflowers, and a checkpoint,” he continues. “They started to bomb it — bam bam bam — and they destroyed it.”
“Eighty guys were killed,” said the paratrooper, who was wounded in the attack. He added: “I was told only 10 made it out.”
Disclaimer: This is a very tabloid-esque source, but the article itself seems legitimate. I can't wait to see the denials and rebuttals that this produces.
I would really like it if some of our Russian friends would dig into this to see if it's true, but at the same time the amount of information suppression for this inside Russia must be insanely high.
Kichatkin’s widow, Oksana, announced her husband’s funeral on her social media page. When reporters began asking about her husband, the post was replaced with one claiming he “is alive and well.”
And when reporters called the Kichatkin home, the phone was answered by a man pretending to be Oksana’s dead husband.
The paratroopers in Shlosberg’s transcript served with Kichatkin, and confirmed that he died fighting in Ukraine. They also talked about why someone posed as Kichatkin on the telephone.
Can't get more suppressed like that, they're basically forcing the dead guy's wife to pretend he's still alive and seem to have someone at her home answering calls.

Right, that's fucking sick.

That's just insane.

I know, I read the article man. I said it must be insanely high because among that, more is happening/will happen. How far will it go?
Putin, 1984 wasn't meant as a how to guide to dictatorships.
“What did they tell you, why are you going there?” one paratrooper asks.
“They don’t tell us anything. They say we are off on an exercise…” comes the answer.
wow
“Eighty guys were killed,” said the paratrooper, who was wounded in the attack. He added: “I was told only 10 made it out.”
talk about getting lit the fuck up, jesus.
Russia is taking way more casualties then I would've thought.

Well I mean Oceania did survive pretty long so...
War against a proper military as a secret undercover reinforcement of a dumb rebel group sure is a bad situation to be. It is not a walk in the park, certainly not comparable to gulf war or afghanistan.
Yeah, it's pretty clear this is not just another bughunt. Here's hoping some more info gets out about the situation.
Russia is taking way more casualties then I would've thought.
I'm pretty sure they expected to easily get in and out while doing their job because. "Lol guys, it just Ukraine!" then end up getting killed or wounded because they believed them to be push overs.

That or Russian paratroopers are poorly trained and/or received poor intel and/or improper briefing.
Russia fucking hired someone to live in her house and pretend to be her husband? What the almighty fuck!?

I'm just talking out my ass but it seems like the Russian military has a very severe problem with proper training.

Yeah some paratroopers died in a war with no proper support, essentially as insurgents thus they must be poorly trained.

I mean, if men are dying due to poor support, that kinda points to incompetence and improper training.
[editline]21st September 2014[/editline]
Perhaps they should have given them proper training in insurgent-style and guerrilla warfare before they just tossed them into the fire. The type of warfare that the Kremlin wanted them to wage seems like a job more suited for some KGB types.

I don't know, it seems kind of incompetent to judge dead soldiers over training when they sent the Ukrainian army in route within 24hrs with less than 5000 soldiers.
The Russian casualties are absolutely brutal. I heard somewhere that 200-odd soldiers had died a week into the intervention (though the Russians may have been there long before the intervention became an open secret). That's crazy high for any military engagement in this day and age, but I guess that's what you get for not being able to support your infantry with heavier arms.

Is there any actual hard numbers on how many Russian military troops were involved late in the conflict? I haven't seen any as of yet so I'm just curious where you got 5k from.

It sounds reminiscent of conflicts a decade ago which where a massive cluster fuck.

Really its a management problem if anything
I really hope this leads to the Russian military deciding to mutiny against the government and kill Putin themselves. It's the only way to stop this bullshit.

Uh why, they completed their mission with great effectiveness. The only thing stopping them was Putin. They could have had all of Ukraine.

Since when have military coups ever benefited a country, let alone one like Russia :v:

Seems like they're sticking to their age-old tactic of "if you throw enough men at it, it'll fall eventually".

Orwellian as fuck.
That or Russian paratroopers are poorly trained and/or received poor intel and/or improper briefing.
i can't really think of a worse situation for a soldier, to be thrown into a clandestine operation where the actual military can't come to your aid, you're being actively attacked from the air by an actual airforce, attacked on the ground by coordinated troops, and you're in a gunfight between rebels that are dressed like you and carrying similar gear but don't know you and other soldiers that are dressed similar to you and also have similar gear but are shooting at you, the amount of confusion must be terrifying, i wonder what the actual casualties are from ukrainian troops and casualties because of friendly fire

NATO says 1000, Ukraine says 5000.
I don't think enough attention is being drawn to the fact that this Russian Paratrooper seems shocked that his platoon was annihilated. As if these ukrainian men and women fighting aren't laying down their lives to defend their homeland. Like it's some sort of surprise they are willing to utterly destroy anyone in their way.
