I'm going to keep this short -
For an unknown reason, my school decided to have a cultural lunch day today. Bascically, each of the 4 serving counters were decorated with flags 'n' stuff from a different country. One was Spain (or maybe Mexico), another was America, and then there was China and Africa. Nothing at any of the 4 counters was anything close to authentic food from the country, it was more like premade frozen stuff, which is okay since my school district is in a severe budget crisis. Anyway, the Spanish/Mexican counter had some sort of pasta and rice and beans, the American station had burgers and apple cobbler (or as the lunch lady described it: "Appuh Kobbluh"), China had some saucey chicken non-sense and eggrolls. While most of this sounds disgusting, it's what you become used to after years in public school. Now... As for the African station, here's what was on their menu: FRIED CHICKEN & CORN BREAD :wtc:
Here's the kicker - the only people who seemed to notice this stereotyping was white kids like myself. Because honestly, all the black kids were busy going crazy over the "African Cuisine". And that's fine with me, if they enjoy their lunch - great! I'm happy for them, but the fact they didn't even notice blows my mind, seeing as these black kids are usually so hasty to call us racists.
I don't have anything against any race, but this degree of obliviousness is enough to surprise anyone.

I'm not quite sure about that. Nowadays, it seems it is more likely to be accused a racist by someone not offended by the statement. Rather, they attempt to see themselves as the minority to see if they'd be offended (Minorities Who usually don't give a shit) and/or it's all a political move.
Well, at least we aren't at this anymore.

That black kid totally is lookin at the "Purple Stuff"
Should've been fried chicken and watermelon.
I don't get what the big deal is. Italians eat speghetti. French people eat snails. Irish people are drinkers. German people eat frankfurters. They're all the same, what makes this anything different?
And mind you I wouldn't consider myself being racist as I AM german, african american, irish and french.
You're all of those?
Pics or it didn't happen
Sue the school saying it offends your race to having other foods there that can be offending to other races.

I don't get what is so bad about that stereotype - If the stereotype was true in your case, AND the subjects of it didn't have anything against it, but actually prove it, where is the problem.
When there is bad stereotype, it should of course not be tolerated, however, stereotypes often are true, no matter how objective and fair you try to be, and is nothing wrong to go with them.
With these days movement, some people actually fear to serve chicken to black people at all, because they think it's a stereotype. That's nonsense. If they were forced to feed only the food which would other people find appropriate due to stereotypes, it would be wrong, but as long as they have choice, I find it no way wrong to assume what they might like and serve it primarily.
Are the afro-american kids in your school stupid or something, FRIED CHICKEN, in Africa?
Fried chicken is more of an African American stereotype anyways, not African.
Well it's not like African people in America are eating actual African cuisine, there's gotta be some sort of common food, just like every other nationality.
No one would call racism against Italians if pizza or spaghetti was served.
All of my black friends buy purple powerade at lunch. It's because there isn't any soda.

They're not the ones serving the food, they're just eating it.
Wouldn't you?
Has nobody else noticed that they decided to use fucking Africa instead of a country? I think the racism started there, as they decided to lump a gigantic continent as one culture. Nigeria =/= South Africa.

Well honestly, Africa is recognized as a continent rather than the specific countries because most African countries don't even have enough cultural influence to be recognized by most people.
I can't understand my lunch lady. I just nod, smile, and say yes.

Are you saying that there are not many cultures in Africa? Because if you are, then you are not so smart.

A stereotype isn't a stereotype if it's true.
And it is, in this case.
It isn't about your color, it's about who that person is.
