A Russian businessman killed three home-invaders with a kitchen knife after they attacked his family and held his seven-month-old grandson at gunpoint. If investigators qualify his actions as a triple murder, the man might face a life sentence.
*On Saturday, four armed men broke into the house of Gegham Sargsyan, 52, in Russia’s Tula Region, some 240 kilometers south of Moscow. All his family – wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and four related children – gathered in the living room to watch a TV show.
"They just pounced on us and began to beat the baby. A seven-month baby! They held a pistol to his temple. They started beating up a seven-year-old girl and two three-year-old boys too. It was just…horrific!" recalls Sargsyan’s daughter-in-law, as reported by Channel One.
The intruders threatened to kill everyone in the household and demanded money and valuables to be handed over immediately. One of the men had his face partially concealed by a scarf, while others did not bother to hide their identities. Russian media speculates this could indicate the assailants’ intent not to leave any witnesses alive.
The attack lasted for some 30 minutes, during which robbers tore off gold jewelry from the women and routinely beat all members of the family. According to Life News tabloid, the assailants were armed with pistols and a baseball bat. After turning over all valuables and money, Sargsyan said he had nothing more to give, but the robbers would not take “no” for an answer.
"They demanded [more money]. They had a knife and a gun… They stuck a gun in my mouth," Sargsyan said. However, the man allegedly managed to break free from their hold and dashed to the kitchen, where he grabbed a kitchen knife.
“One of the attackers chased me, he did not see me straight away,” Sargsyan recalled. “I stabbed him in the stomach.” He stabbed the second one in the head, but the most important thing, he says, was “to knock down the one that held the gun. The rest was easy.”
Sargsyan says knife fighting is a skill he acquired while serving in the army, as well as during the many years he has hunted.
Three of the home-invaders died before the ambulance could make it to the house. The fourth was injured, but managed to flee the scene. All of them have been identified by police, and all four have previous criminal records.

Life sentence for protecting loved ones?
Investigators said Monday, that Sargsyan’s actions, while in the name of self-defense, could have been excessive. Now the businessman, who has been hospitalized with concussion, is accused of multiple homicide. He may face a life sentence for what may be qualified as a triple murder.
Still in hospital, Gegham Sargsyan is eager to return to his loved ones as soon as possible, fearing for their lives while the fourth assailant is still on the loose. He also hopes his case will be assessed as excessive use of force in self-defense, and not multiple homicide.
Defense attorney, Dmitry Agranovsky, believes it might just be the case, even though similar suits are usually tried unfavorably with respect to those who had to resort to self-defense.
"But in this case, the criminals broke into his house and threatened the lives of his family members. It will be recognized as legitimate self-defense, and a criminal case is likely to fail,” he said. “The maximum he faces is interrogations. It is impossible to qualify his actions as criminal.”
The Russian internet community is largely supportive of Gegham’s actions. Comments range from praise to regret that the fourth criminal got away alive.
“Good work, man! It’s a shame the fourth one got away!”
“Respect to Gegham! He’s a real man! I would try to get the fourth one if I was in his place. Those bastards – they got what they deserved! They should not run around among us.”
“The fourth one could tell a lot, the other side of the story. But he’s not there, he’s hiding like a rat, and this means Gegham’s story is true. He’s a great man, who protected the dignity of his family.”
“Good man, it will be sad if he ends up behind bars.”
“Real man… he did what he had to. Fewer freaks left in the world now. Well done, Gagik!”
And meanwhile, Putin skips along.
Damn, that's a legit badass, right there.
may is the keyword though.
Justice system at work.
/sarcasm
If that man gets life for defending his home, then fuck the Judge who hands out that punishment. He saved his family from what appears to have been a certain outcome of them all dying. He deserves a fucking medal, not punishment.
And those assailants harming little children? They deserved what they got.
how

I'm pretty sure this is not gonna happen.
I'm not a very violent person, and I certainly wouldn't enjoy stabbing a bunch of people, but when they're clearly breaking the law and putting my family's lives in danger I wouldn't hesitate. It's frankly ridiculous that this man faces criminal charges.
And those assailants harming little children? They deserved what they got.
And here we go.
Oh look, these robbers are beating up my baby grandchild and the rest of my family. I've give them the money and told them to leave, but they won't take no for answer. Their about to kill me so I react in self defense and kill three of them to save me and my families life. What the fuck? I might be getting life in prison?
Thought it was the UK when I saw the thread title but was rather surprised
How is stabbing 3 assailants armed with pistols and a baseball bat excessive?
And here we go.
Intense FP debate incoming.

Read the article. He's likely to walk.
If investigators qualify his actions as a triple murder, the man might face a life sentence.
Hopefully they won't do that.
Damn, that's a legit badass, right there.
Yeah killing people is SO AWESOME. That is so badass.
And he will get the life sentence, I am 100% positive about that
That's our justice system. Police, criminals and other governmental workers can kill but a simple man cannot even if he is protecting his own family
I am glad I moved from Russia

thank you for expressing your thoughts and adding to the discussion
Pretty sure they would have shot him if any of them survived?
Yeah killing people is SO AWESOME. That is so badass.
Yes, entirely. Killing three people who attacked your family and threatened to kill one of them is bad ass.
Pretty sure they would have shot him if any of them survived?
Well no one cares. Russian justice system only works on bribes
How is stabbing 3 assailants armed with pistols and a baseball bat excessive?
The part where he stabbed one of them in the head might like a word.
Still, here's hoping he gets off scot free.
Yes, entirely. Killing three people who attacked your family and threatened to kill one of them is bad ass.
No, it's not, it's an unfortunate thing. There is nothing 'awesome' or 'badass' about having to be forced into a situation to stab 3 people. Life is not a video game.
Yeah killing people is SO AWESOME. That is so badass.
In this case, it only makes him a hero.
One of the things I like about Russia and other places like it: If someone in authority takes advantage of loopholes and power against people that are being hailed as heroes, they usually don't get through the week without an actual, legitimate death threat from some mafia/mob.
On that note, I'm sure he'll be fine and be back home with his family shortly.
I can respect a man who's willing to defend his family with only a knife and will-power.

It is unfortunate he had to do it, but the fact that he was able to is badass.

Any person can stab another, he's not a badass, I don't think this guy thinks he's a badass. And you're absolutely pitiful if you think that. Life is not a video game.
by any chance, do you think he gets points for doing this?
It's not?
Apparently in a world where you're forced to hurt someone, apparently it's SO AWESOME AND BADASS.
I can understand that 3 people died and they need to legally process the case and make sure it really was self defense. If the man's story is true then he will in all likelihood go free. Judging by what he said it seems like he was in a "defend yourself or die" situation.
