Darren Aronofsky may be busy in the near-term preparing himself for the Oscars next weekend (where his 2010 thriller "Black Swan" is sure to make itself heard), but the project many readers are probably concerned with right now is how he's going to handle himself on "The Wolverine." The director spoke about his plans for the comic book movie again in a recent interview, reiterating previous statements that it should not be considered a sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
"I just love working with Hugh Jackman," Aronofsky said in a pre-Oscars interview with NBC's PopcornBiz. "And I think there's something to be done in that world that hasn't been done yet. I'm also excited to do something that everyone wants to make, as opposed to being the only person that wants to make the film at the beginning."
When "The Wolverine" was first revealed last year, Aronofsky emphasized that his film is best viewed as a "one-off" rather than as a sequel. His comment about "being the only person that want to make the film at the beginning" also echoes comments he made in an earlier interview.
"I'm just trying to have fun," he said of "The Wolverine" last year. "I think, for the first time in my life, you know, every single film that I've done so far I've been the only person in the room who wants to make the movie. And, I kind of am excited about doing a film where actually everyone wants to make it just to see what the experience is like and to see if I can do what I do in that world."
Clearly there's a "company line" at work here: Aronofsky is making a sequel, and he's stepping out of his comfort zone and into the world of popular culture to create something that is more immediately crowd-pleasing. That doesn't necessarily mean "The Wolverine" is going to be unrecognizable to fans of the filmmaker's work, but it may well prove to be unexpected.
I kind of enjoyed the last one, but I thought Deadpool was retarded.
Yeah, they really managed to ruin deadpool chronically.
But it was pretty cool otherwise.
Hmmm, Wolverine + Arronofsky's signature camera and directorial style? Interesting....
