• Two women, desperate for original selfie, carve initials into Rome's Colosseum
These women, said to be in their 20s, decided the best option was to take a coin and use it to carve their initials into the Colosseum's walls and then pose. As The Guardian reports, they were apparently a touch astonished that not everyone approved of their ingenuity. Bystanders reported them to the police. There does seem some doubt, however, as to how big the initials they carved (J and N) were. While the Guardian declares 8 centimeters (about 3 inches), Reuters offers 20 cm (around 7.87 in.) Italy's La Repubblica reports that the women expressed regret, and it offered a quote from them: "We'll remember for a lifetime." Pretty stupid of them, but tourists have defaced historical monuments and statues far worse in the past.
Pretty stupid of them, but tourists have defaced historical monuments and statues far worse in the past.
Fucking Visigoth tourist
Why would they think this was a good idea? Idiots
Yeah just look at ISIS
that was less stupid. and more evil.
Mad people who hold historic objects as sacred incoming.
Haha yea we can always just make another one right?
Pretty stupid of them, but tourists have defaced historical monuments and statues far worse in the past.
fucking napoleon
Mad people who hold historic objects as sacred incoming.
yeah defacing priceless historical artifacts on a whim is a really cool thing to do
Mad people who hold historic objects as sacred incoming.
Because they are sacred, and they serve as reminders of thousands of years of human progress and are monuments to the triumphant markers of history in human civilization's short existence. And that makes them valuable and worthy of our respect and preservation. They have been here for millennia and will continue to be here long after you, me, and these stupid cunts are dead and forgotten. Don't trivialize history. It's invaluable; where we have been before has made us who we are today, and in some way or another determined where we'll be tomorrow.
This isn't really news. If you actually visit the Colosseum, then you will find shitloads of cigarette butts, and loads of initials and markings, many being from ancient times present on the walls. Still, fuck these kinds of people.
Fucking Visigoth tourist
God damn Vandals.
Why would they think this was a good idea? Idiots
The colosseum already has similar grafitti on it. They just got caught.
I'm pretty sure the Colosseum has Roman graffiti on it as well.

My friend goes to school with these two girls, and apparently CNN has been up their ass about interviews and all that. I get that defacing historical monuments is wrong but that doesn't mean it should be international news and possibly ruining their lives.
I'm pretty sure the Colosseum has Roman graffiti on it as well.
I think it's fair to say the graffiti of a roman pleb 2000 years ago is a bit more important and enlightening than the graffiti that some people wrote so they can take a selfie that will be non-existent data in 5 years time when they get a new phone and generic social media platform #27 clears all of the useless shit out of it's backlogged archives Assuming the Colosseum is still around 1000 years at this rate, this kind of stuff will just be confusing and annoying to people studying the ruins
Mad people who hold historic objects as sacred incoming.
Yeah how dare we try to preserve historic objects as best we can for future generations to appreciate in the same conditions we do now. How dare people care about preserving impressive feats of human engineering. May as well bulldoze all the monuments, statues and parks while we're at it too and build factories and high rises. Those benefit us in the long run unlike a bunch of useless piles of metal, stone and plants.
Should have thought about that before committing a crime on a very popular monument.
I never got the "should have thought of x before doing y" argument when the punishment is so much greater than the crime. I agree that they should not have done what they did, but they also could not have predicted their lives being ruined over a relatively insignificant moment.

Who's to say these two girls graffiti won't become important in a few thousand years? Historians diligently copy down pictures of cocks and lewd graffiti all the time.
I bet 2000 years ago, if you were a roman defacing the place, somebody would be upset with you.
Just as if you went down to your local stadium and carved grafitti into the wall they'd be upset as well, but your local stadium is probably not 2000 years old, probably never will be, and archaeologists are not trying to actively study it If you went down to the museum and carved your initials into a protected artifact like the drosten stone or something, and took a selfie with it, then we could start drawing some real comparisons here
Mad people who hold historic objects as sacred incoming.
Holy shit, literally the most tedious attitude
death penalty [editline]11th March 2015[/editline] In all seriousness, this is terrible. I wonder what their final charges will be?

Literally the same shit you would see scrawled on public walls today. :v:
Well, in a thousand years their carving will become historical legacy just like any other marking made there by people in Middle Ages.
The world isn't your playground ladies, have some respect. You're far less important than the fucking Colosseum.
Ego sum iratus...
