Drawing on its massive store of customer data, Amazon plans on shipping you items it thinks you'll like before you click the purchase button. The company today gained a new patent for "anticipatory shipping," a system that allows Amazon to send items to shipping hubs in areas where it believes said item will sell well. This new scheme will potentially cut delivery times down, and put the online vendor ahead of its real-world counterparts.
Shit, how did they know about my derg dildos.
Seems like a relatively smart idea if they get the algorithms right.
great the atlanta shipping center will be filled with fleshlights, burger king masks, and balance ball chairs.
sorry guys.
Seems like it'll barely ever really...work, I mean I know I really want to get some stuff, but can't for money related reasons or just because I don't feel like it.

Did you read what they're actually doing? Seems like it will work just fine. Stock more stuff in areas where that stuff sells well so you can deliver it sooner. It's not rocket surgery.

Frankly I'm surprised they're not doing this already.
It's not really as crazy as it sounds. A good deal of physical stores do the same thing; certain locales order/receive larger shipments of goods because they expect these goods to sell well based on previous customer data.
Walmarts in south Texas don't stock up on snow gear, whereas ones in north Texas do (to a minor extent, though it is noticeable)
The only real difference is that the amount of diversity in Amazon's catalogue far outweighs any retail store; though I imagine the planning/anticipation is going to be levied more towards items that have high turnover, rather than one-off purchases like books. Not really too complex to see the trend of purchases in a region and ship more in advance to anticipate the repeat sales.

Every hub is going to be flooded with dildos. You don't need the next amazon technology to tell you that.

Dammit man, I'm a doctor, not a rocket technician.
This could bode really well with pre-orders.
