Australians have been deprived of live, large-scale gaming events held locally, with the last major event--Melbourne's eGames--last occurring in 2009. Opportunities to get a look at pre-release titles have been few and far between, but retailer EB Games is hoping to fill the event gap, confirming today that the company will be hosting a live expo in October this year. Dubbed the EB Games Expo, the consumer-focused event will be held on the Gold Coast on 15-16 October. The event will take place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, with an EB statement saying that the Expo would showcase new release and upcoming titles playable "for the first time" in Australia. EB Games national events manager Trent Weekes said that the Expo would follow on from the retailer's trade-only conference in October. "Our internal October conference is already Australia's largest gaming event, which attracts a huge amount of international gaming talent, so it was a natural progression that we open the event to the gaming community," he said. Weekes said a full exhibitor list would be released in the coming months. At least two publishers are already on board with the Expo—Ubisoft and EA Australia. Ubisoft MD Edward Fong said that the Expo would allow gamers to immerse themselves in the industry. "It's a great initiative, and something that the Australian public has been asking for. We can't wait for the opportunity for our fans to get their hands on our latest Christmas blockbusters – before they hit the shelves." The Expo will feature a large-scale exhibition floor showcasing upcoming titles, as well as have a stage area dubbed EB Live where publishers will showcase gameplay footage or developer presentations. Public access will be split over three six-hour sessions over the Saturday and Sunday of the Expo, with an EB statement saying that the event was split into three to "ensure that a maximum number of guests can attend the event whilst maintaining the quality of the experience that ticket holders will receive". While the floor exhibition will remain the same for the three sessions, the EB Live presentations will be different. It won't all be game demos and presentations, however. The Expo will also feature the EB Arena Spectacular, a showcase of all products being presented at the Expo as well as freestyle motorcross performed in the EB Arena by Showtime FMX. The World Cyber Games National Finals will also be held at the Expo, and is scheduled for the night of Saturday 15 October. The Expo will also play host to a cosplay competition on Sunday 16 October. Pre-paid tickets to the event will cost A$29.95 per session, with general admission tickets purchased on the day to set you back A$31.95. EB is also selling VIP tickets for A$99.95—VIP tickets will allow buyers express access to selected games on the showfloor, priority seating at all Arena events, backstage access to media interview recordings, and more. Tickets go on sale on 2 June, and can be purchased at any EB Games store or online at ebexpo.com.au.
http://au.gamespot.com/news/6312954/eb-games-confirms-details-of-aussie-consumer-show?sid=6312954&skipmc=1
oh wow, this certainly sounds interesting! all we have here is supanova and the occasional anime convention. 'bout time we got a video game expo/convention. the admission fee is kind of high though. jeez.
I don't like EBgames, they'll only hire you if you have a vagina or are 30+. Prices are overpriced as hell, I can't see it being a big hit. I think I'll stick with the games dev events that are held in the city. :v

Those two company's will make the profits back on other items in the store Tvs, Music, Cloths etc. But EB cant. Anyway I think and hope this does become a hit, because we all know Australia needs something like this.
Getting this on the Australian thread OP. Cheaper than I thought, will definitely talk to my friends about this.
I know that Australia needs it but I just don't like EBgames as a company.
True, but who else is going to do it tho? I think for now we should go with the flow and hope for the best.
it will fail with the attitude this country still has about videogames, i can't see this going anywhere at all
it will fail with the attitude this country still has about videogames, i can't see this going anywhere at all
I say if big games studios and company's get behind it there shouldn't be a reason to fail. Also the Australian games community.
The Australian games community is actually pretty large in direct comparison to our sports following population. The problem is that you can pretty much halve off most of that community since they're COD nerds.
Also that Australia is one big ass of a island.
Also that Australia is one big ass of a island.
An island with a huge fucking desert in the middle. [editline]10th May 2011[/editline] With no water. [editline]10th May 2011[/editline] We also have docks with ridiculous names such as woolloomooloo.
YES FUCK I LIVE ON THE GOLD COAST!
Damn. 30 bucks isn't a large fee, but it would be if I count driving there/plane. What to do..
it will fail with the attitude this country still has about videogames, i can't see this going anywhere at all
A countries government rarely represents it's people's thoughts. Because Australia's ancestors are debters and criminals, it's government thinks that if they play violent video games, they'll turn into mass murderers.
It's not like there are many games conventions in the rest of the world either.
Man I would love to go.

I'm a University student that's been gaming for years now, but recently a few of my mates have gotten into the whole 'gaming is cool and trendy' bullshit and swear that Black Ops is the best CoD. A few others were hardcore closet Halo nerds back in the day as well
Yeah casual gaming is massive now, and everyone is wanting some of the action.
I have never understood where Australia's hatred towards video games stemmed from. Can an Australian maybe elaborate a little bit for me?
I have never understood where Australia's hatred towards video games stemmed from. Can an Australian maybe elaborate a little bit for me?
Nearly our whole government is made up of religious conservatists (note Tony Abbot) We also have a large amount of soccer mums.
It's a select few in the Government who are against it. Doesn't help that debates on the TV about it are always VERY biased.
Finish my HSC on the 11th of November damn it.
I have never understood where Australia's hatred towards video games stemmed from. Can an Australian maybe elaborate a little bit for me?
Hatred for games? What? Good job stereotyping a nation because of the opinions of those in power, does this mean I can stereotype the entire US population as fucking idiots based off of many of those in power? You'll find many people here in Australia love games, (excuse me for a hipster moment) but those games are typically console-mainstream (does that even make sense?) titles. But anyways, as someone said most of the gamers here are the Call of Duty sort. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find someone who doesn't play Call of Duty. Also I'm not going to this event, don't live anywhere near the Gold Coast and don't have much to waste on plane tickets. [editline]11th May 2011[/editline]
thats not the reason, games are so expensive here because the government put a tax on video games
We only have a tax of 10%, if the prices were comparable to the US then we would be paying $55/$66AUD for new releases. Part of the reason we pay higher prices is because we have a higher standard of living compared to many other Western countries, and we are able to afford such prices. Compare the minimum wage in Australia to other countries. This is also why digital distribution prices are high, and a contributing factor to that is publishers wanting titles on digital distribution platforms to be equal to retail so as to not fuck over retailers.
nah people hate video games here, i have no idea what part of australia you're in man beyond cod maybe
All alone here in Perth. :smith:
And this year's top game.. which we can't show.. because the government censored it. And then millions upon millions of fucking people go and kill every fucking idiotic politician and they finally fix their shit.
yes violence! that will show them that video games don't make people violent
EB Games? Ohohohohohahaha I only go there to laugh at the release-day prices on the several-year-old second-hand games :v: Dick Smith is the only store I buy retail games from, they undercut all other stores (including JB!) like crazy on new releases. I got Starcraft 2 on release for $40. :mmmsmug:
