Best of buddies: John Howard and George Bush at the White House. Picture: John Feder
* Howard a fleeting character in Decision Points
* Rates only three mentions, one just a footnote
* Bush given whole chapter in Howard's memoir
JOHN Howard considers George W. Bush a close friend but it is difficult to detect evidence of their bond in the former President's memoir, released this week.
In Decision Points, Mr Bush's references to Mr Howard are few and fleeting compared with the former Prime Minister's rapture over their relationship in his memoir, Lazarus Rising, published last month.
On one page, Mr Bush mentions Mr Howard in passing among a cluster of world leaders who shared his belief in 2002 that Iraq's former dictator, Saddam Hussein, posed a threat.
He devotes much space to his closeness and admiration for former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and mentions how he was proud to make Mr Blair one of the few foreign leaders to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
As if it were an afterthought, Mr Howard is named in a footnote at the bottom of the page.
"At the same ceremony, I presented the Medal of Freedom to Prime Minister John Howard of Australia, who I called a 'man of steel', and to president Alvaro Uribe, the courageous leader of Colombia."
There is only one other reference to Mr Howard in the book, also brief, when Mr Bush relates how "almost every ally I consulted on Iraq - even staunch advocates of confronting Saddam like Prime Minister John Howard of Australia - told me that a UN resolution was essential to win public support in their countries".
In an interview with The Times of London, Mr Bush said he remained friends with Mr Howard and former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi.
In all, Mr Howard rates three citations in the index of Decision Points, and none of the passing references elucidates anything about their relationship.
By comparison, Mr Howard devotes an 11-page chapter to the relationship. He begins it with how his "close personal friendship with George Walker Bush" attracted great attention. "We were closer friends than any other two occupants of the leadership position we once respectively held," he says.
"We remain in regular contact. We have seen each other and dined together with our wives on a number of occasions since both being out of office. It is a genuine friendship. We enjoy each other's company."
Mr Bush scores 38 citations in the index of Lazarus Rising.
Mr Howard tells how Mr Bush "would listen to and act very deliberately on advice I offered" and how "immensely grateful" he was for support in the Iraq war.
"As a way of indicating publicly how he felt, he invited Janette and me to spend a weekend with him and Laura at the family ranch in Crawford, Texas."
On election night in 2004, Mr Bush telephoned Mr Howard just after his victory speech. "He was genuinely excited about my win."
Mr Howard also told how their relationship was rekindled when he went to Washington in March 2008 to receive the Irving Kristol award from the American Enterprise Institute. "In discussing contemporary issues, our old intimacy continued over that dinner," he said.[/quote]

So much for the "Man of Steel" comment.
He didn't write about some one else in his auto-biography?! WHAT AN ASSHOLE
It wouldn't have made such great headlines like "My only dying regret is not privatizing social welfare!"
Bush was the president of America, I'd say America is a more influential country, so of course he has more people to write about.
A terrible president not including a terrible prime minister in his memoirs? Oh no.
I didn't even know who guy was before reading this article. Seriously, who cares?
its his memoir he can mem who ever he wants
