DANIEL Balsam hates spam. Most everybody does, of course. But he has acted on his hate as few have, going far beyond simply hitting the delete button. He sues them.
Eight years ago, Mr Balsam was working as a marketer when he received one too many e-mail pitches to enlarge his breasts.
Enraged, he launched a Web site called Danhatesspam.com, quit a career in marketing to go to law school and is making a decent living suing companies who flood his e-mail inboxes with offers of cheap drugs, free sex and unbelievable vacations. 'I feel like I'm doing a little bit of good cleaning up the Internet,' Mr Balsam said.
From San Francisco Superior Court small claims court to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, Mr Balsam, based in San Francisco, has filed many lawsuits, including dozens before he graduated law school in 2008, against e-mail marketers he says violate anti-spamming laws.
His many victories are mere rain drops in the ocean considering that Cisco Systems Inc estimates that there are 200 billion spam messages circulating a day, accounting for 90 per cent of all e-mail.
Still, Mr Balsam settles enough lawsuits and collects enough from judgments to make a living. He has racked up well in excess of US$1 million (S$1.3 million) in court judgments and lawsuit settlements with companies accused of sending illegal spam.
that's certainly an interesting career, I wonder what his professional title would be?
That's a pretty damned good salary.
It's not so easy. Most of the scammers are ferreted away in the far corners of the lands that law forgot.
A man using the legal system for good? Impossible!
He's a hero of the internet generation.

Apparently some act (Can-Spam act) states that all messages not sent or referred to you by someone you've allowed to send you things (this means any sites that you gave permission to send you messages or whatnot, and who they refer to you) is not illegal, but any messages not in that category, or with misleading titles, with intent to promote a product, event, etc, is illegal.
I wonder if the profits would cover the legal costs.

It's common procedure that loser of a lawsuit has to pay for all legal costs of the winner.

That's why lawyers often take cases for "free" with poorer clients. If it's a good case and they think they can win they can get a very nice split of the money.
Gmail has always caught 100% of all my spam, so it never bothered me that much. v:v:v
Good on him, though. That's an awesome job with an awesome cause.
I love this guy ! Thank you !
Janitor?
How could 93% fail to see this is real?
Just kidding, it's obviously a seagull in a human suit.
We should all send him a hundred emails thanking him.

Was I the only one that laughed my ass off at that?
Was I the only one that laughed my ass off at that?
I chuckled, but laughing my ass off would be an overstatement.
The spamm that pisses me off the most is the fucking "WoW blizzard you have been hacked" "Please confirm your account bullshit".
Going to sue the bastards.
Fucking champ that's what his job title should be.
