Man has first successful skull and scalp transplant
James Boysen, who is 55 and from Texas, was missing the whole of the crown of his head after treatment for a rare type of cancer.
The cancer of the muscle on the scalp was treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but it permanently damaged the surrounding tissue.
The scalp and skull were destroyed by the treatment, leaving his brain vulnerable.
Normally doctors would use a combination of skin grafts and metal plates or 3D-printing to reconstruct his skull.
But he was already on immune suppressing drugs after earlier kidney and pancreas transplants which were now failing.
His struggling organs, and the medicine, were stopping doctors performing the reconstruction and the hole in the skull prevented an organ transplant.
Dr Jesse Selber, who led the team at Anderson, said the hole was 10 by 10 inches (25 cm by 25 cm) covering "the entire top half of the head".

Whoa, that's bizarre. You can see the donor had a different hair color. How does that work, anyhow? Will it eventually grow to be his?
Imagining what his head would look like without a skull on the operating table is gonna give me nightmares
He could pull off a sick Frankenstein's monster costume on halloween.

There's something fantastic about 3D printed skull replacements being mentioned as "the normal procedure"
I thought he had a full skull transplant. :v:

something like this nsfw (duh)
Head transplants soon. I imagine a future where we are able to clone ourselves, or 3D print/construct an entire body that's essentially made from our DNA. When our head is transplanted to the new body there will be no rejection between either of the two. We could essentially live forever. I've made this post before and people thought it to be ridiculous in nature, but I think it could be possible. Maybe not the immortality part per se but definitely head transplants being a regular thing like heart transplants or kidney.

Way better then some gore I've seen.
It's too bad the donor was also a victim of male pattern baldness
Jesus, and this guy already has his kidney and pancreas failing as well?
Sounds like a hell of a situation if you ask me.

If you're truly interested there's some fantastic surgery videos on youtube. Not tagging because obviously it's NSFW. It's brain surgery.

I imagine your brain would give out at about the 150 year mark. Would still be cool though, having a healthy body until your brain fails.

What strange music to overlay a brain surgery video with.
That's pretty metal.

No, this is bad to the bone.

Lots of medical professionals listen to music whilst they're operating or doing important stuff. When you're performing life-saving surgery, I imagine it's probably best not to think about the fact that your actions currently decide whether a human being with a life and family (with whom you might well have already spoken) lives or dies.
Couldn't he have used a female donor with beautiful full luscious hair instead of some balding dude :V
Anyway, this is fascinating stuff. A good friend of mine who's had a stroke a few years back told me that at the treatment facility, people were walking around with large pieces of their skulls missing, walking around with their brains practically exposed while they were undergoing complicated brain surgery in multiple stages. The missing bone was preserved for days at a time before being put back in place.

I hope they wear some sort of protection. I know I wouldn't like dust, dirt and shit to fall on my exposed brain.

As insensitive as some might perceive that, he legitimately COULD pull that off if he still has those stitches in about 4 months.
What ever happened with that head transplant that a doctor said they were going to preform back in like, April?
Did it turn out to be Hoax?

things like that dont happen over night man. Months and months of practice and research have to go into it be for he can even attempt it. Being the first to do THE most difficult and risky procedure ever needs a lot of time to set up.

When I went to get my second hip replacement they wheeled me into the OR. The doctor had his Pandora open on one of the big flatscreen TV's they have in there. He was playing some old-ish rock if I remember correctly.
Good thing I'm not a doctor because I listen to nothing but screamo.

that was strangely satisfying and relieving to watch them remove the blood buildup

I thought his skull fell off.
