It was partly inspired by Metal Gear Rex, partly by Battletech/Mechwarrior 'mechs.

Pffffft AC, real mechs are walking gun platforms, not humanoid battle armors rocketing around the battlefield with jet engine jetpacks.

Although some of the AC mechs are pretty cool...

Oh and note that there's a difference between a mech and a 'mech.

The inspiration for the upper torso came from MG Rex, BT Shadow Cat and BT Cougar.
