"The Kinect for Xbox One sensor will not have an adaptor that allows it to plug into a computer," a Microsoft spokesperson told Ars Technica.
"The new generation Kinect for Windows sensor will connect to computers using a standard USB3 port."
The spokesperson went on to say that while the two Kinect devices were built using shared technologies, each has been individually tested and licensed.
"The new generation Kinect for Windows sensor will be a fully tested, licensed and supported Kinect experience on Windows.
"Kinect for Xbox One is being built for and tested with the Xbox One," Microsoft added.

No way i'm buying two devices, one for PC, one for Xbox
Until someone builds custom drivers for it within a day.

and a physical plug too, lol

So what they're saying that the Xbox One Kinect won't work on Windows, but they're still making one for Windows that will work?
Okay? What exactly is the problem?
and a physical plug too, lol
Because third party converters don't exist.
This is the back of the Xbox 1 and the Kinect port literally just looks like a slightly modified USB so there wouldn't be compatibility.

There will be third party cords out within the week it's released :v:
$10 says you can hack off the proprietary connector and solder in a USB plug

Purchase a xbox with kinect and can't be used in windows due to microsoft clusterfuck
Like Kotaku BR says:
"It's too much fun to purchase the same hardware twice to use in different operating systems. Nice work microsoft.

Forcing you to buy two of one things if you have an xbox one and want to use the Kinect for some of its niches.
The people who will be the most affected are small developers, but it's still a stupid thing since having the ability to use it for things other than just the xbox is great.

They are trying to sell the same product to consumers twice.

Doesn't everyone hate Kinect so much that they'd never consider buying it for windows anyway?
Doesn't everyone hate Kinect so much that they'd never consider buying it for windows anyway?
It has some uses for PC users. You can use it for cheap motion capture and 3D scanning. I'm involved in a project that uses it as a cheap green-screen.
Doesn't everyone hate Kinect so much that they'd never consider buying it for windows anyway?
No you see the thing is we don't want it for games. We want it for the actual practical stuff it can do.
Doesn't everyone hate Kinect so much that they'd never consider buying it for windows anyway?
No, ironically it's very useful for things that aren't consoles games.
Why the fuck would anyone buy kinect if they dont have to, let alone buy one for windows is beyond me...
Considering the Kinect is required for the Xbox One who'd make that deal anyway? Buying a $500 console just to use the sensor for your computer seems a little dumb. This seems like a non-issue, even if it's annoying.

No one is saying to buy it "just to use the sensor for your computer".

Because the Kinect is a really neat device for development stuff and is a good webcam at the same time?
So what they're saying that the Xbox One Kinect won't work on Windows, but they're still making one for Windows that will work?

because they want you to spend double the money for something that you should only have to buy once, for starters
there is no logical reason why they couldn't have it be windows compatible except to gain proprietary money
and a physical plug too, lol
I'll give it less than a week until someone has actually found a useful purpose for the xbones kinect sensor.
Because the Kinect is a really neat device for development stuff and is a good webcam at the same time?
It's neat allright, but not when combined with a console.

And I guess sony is going to respond to this by making drivers for playstation eye on PC

There's not really much to drive. it's just two webcams stuck together.
There's not really much to drive. it's just two webcams stuck together.
that's not really true though
it's an extremely powerful software setup and some pretty decent cameras are used to pull this off actually
i don't know where people got the idea that the kinect was just two cameras plugged into a console.
They're really really quite useful at various tasks outside of gaming.

He's talking about the new PS Eye

If you can't use your Xbox One when the Kinect is unplugged, what's the point? Wait for the PC version to launch in 2014 or buy the Dev kit for $400. If you want to develop for it, it'd be cheaper to get the dev kit anyway. Sure, the fact that the Xbox Kinect becomes useless when your Xbox breaks sucks, but honestly in what other scenario is this an issue?
Im sorry but why are microsoft continuing to go down a route that is just going to hurt their reputation. Yes someone will make a converter for it, also someone will make the program to make it work. will Mircosoft looks bad after all that, properly yes. Will they care no because people will always buy their products............. why? because they feel its is the right thing to get.
look just get a pc or if not a ps4 but dont give into the xbone

Where you buy an Xbox One (I'm sure someone will) and want to use the one that came with your Xbox for something on a PC.
I'll bet a wad of cash they've been lazy and just implemenmted the USB protocol with a proprietary connector, inb which case all you have to do is, as mentioned, solder on a standard USB connector and create a simple driver.
God I hate proprietary shit, especially when it's done just to fuck with customers
Where you buy an Xbox One (I'm sure someone will) and want to use the one that came with your Xbox for something on a PC.
Yeah, that's right. But really, get a PS4 and then buy the Kinect for PC when it comes out. You'll likely end up spending the same amount of money (assuming $99 Kinect price, might be different) and you'll probably get the same functionality if not a bit more.
And the One doesn't launch before late fall (afaik) and the Kinect for PC is coming sometime in 2014 (probably Spring), so maybe it's just me but I could wait a few months if it means I wouldn't have to alternate between added functionality on my PC and a functional console.
