Here’s a big, bouncy ball of unexpected good news for you. Brian Fargo and his studio inXile Entertainment are, as you well know, working on a sequel to the seminal RPG Wasteland, and have successfully Kickstarted it to the tune of $1.6 million. Since exceeding their initial target of $900,000, they’ve been able to add Mac and Linux versions to their masterplan for the post-nuclear roleplaying game. But that’s not all. They’ve just been in touch to say that, if they can reach $2.1 million during the 17 days remaining on the funding schedule, they’ll be bringing in Obisidian Entertainment, including Planescape: Torment mastermind Chris Avellone, to help them make the game.Oh my word. The minds behind Fallout and Planescape, together. A veritable RPG supergroup. This has to happen. Says Chris Avellone, “Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance. While I’ve worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, getting the chance to work on the spiritual successor to the Fallout franchise is a honor.”Brian Fargo observes that “I have a history with the guys at Obsidian that dates back to the days of Interplay’s Black Isle studios. Together we created some of the greatest RPG’s of all time, from Fallout 1 & 2 to titles like Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. It is great that we now have a chance to reunite on a project like Wasteland 2.”It’s about tools to speed up and ease development as much as it is bringing in addition talent, apparently. “Obsidian has an incredible library of story, dialog and design tools that they have used to create hits like Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and of course, Fallout: New Vegas. Regardless of the tech we use to develop the game, experience with these tools will help us efficiently design the game without wasting time and resources on the tools needed for development.”This is also good news for Obisidian, potentially, who recently suffered a round of lay-offs. Hopefully this can help get them back to fighting strength. So, you know what to do. 2012 really is the most extraordinary year for PC gaming, isn’t it?I’ve also just finished a quickie interview with Brian Fargo, talking more about what this (hopeful) collaboration means, how the whole crowdsourcing thing’s gone and his plans for the Kicking It Forward philanthropic reinvestment scheme, which I’ll get to you as soon as possible.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2 http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/30/obisidian-to-co-develop-wasteland-2-on-one-condition/
Best. News. Ever.
Please be like Fallout 1 and 2 with it not being a real-time FPSRPG.
Please be like Fallout 1 and 2 with it not being a real-time FPSRPG.
Never going to happen, theres just no real market for those kinds of games any more.
pretty sure it's going to resemble fallout 1 and 2 more than fallout 3 and new vegas. otherwise it would be insanely expensive
Never going to happen, theres just no real market for those kinds of games any more.
it's been confirmed to be a crpg
Please be like Fallout 1 and 2 with it not being a real-time FPSRPG.
Agreed. Gives the people clamoring for Fallout to return to that somewhere to go, and it lets those of us who want our retro-50s post apocalypse to happen in real time and in the first and third person views continue to enjoy Fallout as it is today. That being said I won't be buying Wasteland 2 if they do it old school. I'm just not a fan of that style of game, Fallout 1 and 2 bored me because of it.
It will be like FO1/2/Wasteland 1
Never going to happen, theres just no real market for those kinds of games any more.
"There's no market for adventure games" "There's no market for dwarf mining games" "There's no market for puzzle games"
Never going to happen, theres just no real market for those kinds of games any more.

We’re going back to the original and building from there. No first person shooter, we’re going top down so you get a tactical feel for the situation. And we’re not ditching the party play to turn it into some hack-and-slash bloodfest. It’s turn based, tactical, with a storyline that will be deeper and broader.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2
Toaster repair skill, please.
Donated 150. 2013 can't come any sooner.
Half a million dollars in 17 days? That shouldn't be too hard; this game has got a lot of folks interested.
Chris Avellone is one of few incredibly talented writers in the industry who understands about writing for an interactive medium. No one can touch him. Very odd that people think Bioware have very good writers when you look at something like Planescape: Torment or Old World Blues.
I am so fucking pumped for this game. I love that it is topdown (turn based in pretty good too, though even if it was realtime it wouldn't be bad, it's all about how you pace it). Since we're on the subject, anyone else that really liked Fallout Tactics? Believe me I played the shit out of Fallout 1 and 2 and loved them, but FO:Tactics was awesome too (yeah yeah it fucked up a lot of FO universe things, but once you look past that it was fun, especially the obscene amount of weapons).

It looked good. Apparently they were gonna stick to the lore this time too. Oh and alligator deathclaw type things. Can't wait to see all the bugs!
Can't wait to see all the bugs!
Well they don't have publishers hounding their ass now so it'll be better, not like New Vegas (Bethesda did the QA for that game btw, not Obsidian, it's their fault)
Planescape Torment is my most favourite RPG of all time next to Fallout, Torment was more based around dialogue, storytelling, description with so much juice, if they actually band up together this will be one of the greatest things to happen.

Son of a bitch, they don't take credit cards
Chris Avellone wrote Planescape. i can't donate fast enough
Let me guess, Bethesda in charge of fixing bugs? Haha, fuck that shit.
Never going to happen, theres just no real market for those kinds of games any more.
There still is a market, the fanbases for those two games are proof of it. It's just that said market has become so niche that it's not feasible/profitable to make a game for it beyond the Low Indie scale of things. Is that her real name or a fake stage name used in the ending credits?
It's a name people made up to insult her [editline]30th March 2012[/editline] her real name is jennifer hepler
I'm still a but hesitant on donating to kickstarter. I love the idea, but I haven't seen any project I'm interested in being finished yet. I'm sure there's some legal shit to make sure the games get made well, but I'll wait till I see some results. That aside, I hope they can get Obsidian aboard. All their games have been excellent in the writing department, even if they're a bit "unfinished" at release.
Funny how this is considered the spritual successor of Fallout 1/2 when those games were in many ways the spiritual successors to Wasteland.
It got me to donate. They've already announced a Linux version, so it'd be pretty cool to see a game Obsidian worked on released on Linux.
