A heartbreaking story out of North Carolina. Megan Riggans, 22, was killed in a car crash while being driven to a hospital by her husband Brian on Sunday night, reports the Daily Mail.
Riggans was in labor and was going to give birth when the car crashed in Staley, North Carolina, during a severe thunderstorm.
Around 10 p.m., Riggans' car hydroplaned off a wet road and slammed into a tree.
State Trooper J.R. Zachary, of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, told the Burlington Times-News that Riggans was not wearing a seat-belt, which caused her to get tossed around the car.
When emergency personnel arrived, Riggans was unconscious and taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where doctors delivered her baby boy.
However, Riggans was later pronounced dead from her car accident injuries.
The boy was transferred to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, as was Riggans’ husband who had injuries to his face and back.
Officer Zachary said that doctors did not know the extent of the baby's injuries due to lack of oxygen, during the crash.
The couple were married in April of 2012 and were expecting the child this month.
did the car make it out okay
Jesus.
Hearting the fuck out of this.

Um, no fucking shit?
Hence the baby?
"Woman gives birth. She was expecting to give birth."
They should've cut that part out of the story.
honestly thats pretty fucked up, but in the lighter of things. the baby survived, and I guess we can all be thankful for that.

I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt until I see a nine month pregnant woman try to put a seatbelt on for myself.

pretty sure the person who wrote the article wanted to point out the child being a bastard
which is still irrelevant to the crash though
and by bastard I mean conceived out of marriage, since I don't know the term for that
I can't imagine being newly married and having my wife die getting into a car accident while she's in labor with my child. The husband must be a wreck after having that happen. At least, the baby survived, though. Not all was lost, thankfully.

It survived, but the oxygen deprivation could have severely damaged its brain.
Doesn't that only apply to people born out of marriage, not conceived?
hence me saying that I didn't know the proper word?
I feel bad for the husband but more for the newborn.
His birthday will be the same day his mother died. And he may even grow up, blaming himself for her death.
I was driving 4 or so hours through NC yesterday, the weather was awful and could hardly see the cars in front of you. I'm not too surprised this happened, tragic that it did though.
honestly thats pretty fucked up, but in the lighter of things. the baby survived, and I guess we can all be thankful for that.
I don't think so. It's great the baby survived and all, but now he might have to jump over some really tall hurdles in his life.
What sucks is that the father is most likely going to take the blame for what happened. Well technically, since the car hydroplaned and all, he was most definitely going at a pace he couldn't handle... Incredibly sad.
One life ends and another begins.
I never understood the point of reporting on incidents like this, why do people like to read shit like this?
I mean, it will never affect anything in your life.
Sure, it's like a story but reading a story on someone's actual misfortune for no reason is kind of fucked up.

i don't consider this story a misfortune
the baby survived the car accident
yes, the mother died, but don't you think the mother would have wanted the child to survive more than anything? this is a miracle, in some respects. the couple got in a car accident, what happened happened. it's unfortunate that the mother died, but ultimately the fact that the child was uninjured is great news.

dude, you miss the fact that the car crash kills a woman whose pregnant, but the BABY survives.
If it was just "woman dies", it wouldn't be news. You have a lot to learn.

He's kinda right though tbh. Either way you spin it it's depressing as fuck.

How do I have a lot to learn? Cases where a mother dies but the child survives have uprooted before many times. Hell there's even a whole section of terminology regarding this.
Even though it's not specifically like this case, maternal death occurs a lot.
Learning about that happening is useful though, stories like this on the other hand have no info to be withheld
when in your life will you ever bring this story up in your mind besides conversation? And even still if you use this in small talk people will look at you funny.
dude, who cares. It's news, I read it and you're offended that I read it. I've now lost interest.
[editline]4th September 2012[/editline]
that's like saying "reading about the holocaust makes you psychotic".

holy shit jumping to massive conclusions over what I said
whatever, just read your pointless stories
"maternal deaths occur a lot"
this is a CAR CRASH, where the mother dies and the child survives.
How difficult is this to understand?
I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt until I see a nine month pregnant woman try to put a seatbelt on for myself.

I'm skeptical. I don't think they would want to shit all over this poor lady in these times.
holy shit jumping to massive conclusions over what I said

The point is it's an interesting and fairly unique story. Just because something doesn't affect you doesn't mean you can't find it interesting. We're not all as self-centered as you.
I mean, we are self-centered, but not nearly as much as you are.
Two things kind of spoiled this story for me. Obviously as tragic as this event it, I can't seem to find the silver lining in all of it.
Firstly:
State Trooper J.R. Zachary, of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, told the Burlington Times-News that Riggans was not wearing a seat-belt, which caused her to get tossed around the car
It just seems so sad that a soon to be mother looses her life over a such a simple thing. I can't help but keep thinking of how stupid her death was. If I was a mother about to give birth, I'd want to make sure I was as safe as possible while in a car. AND, the weather conditions were horrible. If it's raining so hard that it makes it difficult to see, I'd be damn sure that seatbelt was on.
Secondly:
Officer Zachary said that doctors did not know the extent of the baby's injuries due to lack of oxygen, during the crash.
And that's just the last drop. While it's nothing short of a miracle for the child to have survived, he might have severe brain damage. I can't imagine how devastated the father is.
You hydroplane when you drive too fast for the road conditions and/or you have worn tread on your tires. This guy let the whole 'OMG she's giving birth!' thing go to his head. Driving around in the rain with no seatbelt, well what can you say really? This is the exact reason why seatbelts are mandated, you don't know when you'll be in an accident, but a pregnant woman in labor may be reluctant to use one. Unless you opt to call an ambulance, she's riding in the car with no seatbelt.
The husband will, and should, carry a lot of guilt over this.
did the car make it out okay
duuuude
I don't know when you should tell people that they "should" feel a lot of guilt over this when their lives have been tragically and suddenly ruined.
Damn, that's just tragic.
have to admit that in that type of weather it's a bit dumb to not wear a seat belt even if it's hard to reach around the waist
