The most hilarious part about all this is that the first successful landing on mars happened in 1971.

By the Soviets. :v:
There two things I like being free, and being dumb. FREEDOM.
Im still confused about why this one is such a big deal. I mean its always amazing, but we already have rovers on mars don't we?

Because of how hard it is to land anything on Mars.

Because its a 1-ton "Laboratory Rover".
Curiosity isn't just going to take pictures, its going to be testing soil and air samples and doing studies on climate changes and whatnot.
It's real big:

Also, it will tell us if habitation has been or ever will be viable. (wink)
Not to mention the testing of the new EDL sequence that allows for the most precise non-terrestrial landings in history.

Also it has a nuclear reactor, able to theoretically last 15 years continuing experiments. Do its a testbed to see the viability and effectiveness of nuclear powered rovers in space exploration.

if by successful you mean it stopped working after 20 seconds
I told the teacher there's only three letters I need to know:
U, S, and A
INHALE FREEDOM EXHALE PATRIOTISM

Eighteen seconds after landing:
"Yay, we got to - Fuck, it broke."

It's the top picture of Ycap's post.
Why is this rover getting more publicity than the other rover missions to mars?
