NaNo starts in about two weeks, and I was curious as to whether anyone else from around here planned on getting involved.
If so, what're your plans so far? Are you doing any prepwork? Do you actually think you'll make it to 50,000 within thirty days?
Would love to hear from anyone else involved this year.

I've always been interested in doing this, but I stopped thinking about it since I stopped writing. Maybe I will give it a go now that my mind is fresh.
I love writing, I've kept tons of essays and written various journal entries/writing prompts just for fun. But I've rarely dipped past more than 3 pages per work, 50,000 will be a challenge.
Probably not gonna participate this year. I finished it 3 years ago, failed 2 years ago and didn't bother last year.
However, I'm doing a challenge on reddit which is to complete my novel before 2017. So I might have to write a lot more than 50 000 words next month haha
Ive always participated but never finished

It's always easier when you're participating with others. You should go for it this year!
Just put up a participation list. Who wants in?
Next year I will participate, I've started a couple things, but until I've got my degree I just don't have time. :(

Yeah man, sign me up. I think writing is quite fun, been keeping a document writing random short stories. Will probably expand on one of them.
I always want to participate, maybe I should this year.

You should take a stab at it! I'm telling you, there's really no better feeling in the world than making it to November 30th and having a full novel written. I won't say it's easy, but it's definitely worthwhile.
I can't even finish a short story. My mind keeps wandering off to another new idea before I get to finish one. :s:
I'm tempted to do this, but I'm fairly certain college might get in the way. Been kicking around some SF story concepts for a while though...

I'd estimate the 1667 words/day takes a good hour and a half every day, plus or minus thirty minutes depending on your writing speed and how well you've planned out your story in advance.
It's easily manageable if you know what you're doing-- you'd be surprised how many ten or fifteen minutes of empty time the average person has in their day.
Put me down. Nothing inspires me to work more than a public challenge, and I need to kick myself back in to writing. I set it aside while I was unemployed, because I felt guilty that I was indulging something other than job hunting, and if I ever want to accomplish my goal of being a recognized writer, I can't live forever not doing that.
Terry Pratchett said, "I try to write every day, because when I don't, I feel a bit like a fraud - that is, that I'm not a real writer."
As for the above discussion, the biggest time sink in writing depends on what you're writing. Hard Sci-fi or anything 'realistic' usually demands a touch of research (about two hours per topic you're unfamiliar with, I heard once.) Something 'character driven' (that is, that cares about characters with depth, complexity, and their challenges) puts the demand more on finding ways to present that depth, which naturally has a variable scope of time.
Which is all mostly to say, you can accomplish great things in writing if you know how to efficiently manage the time you spend doing it.
Put me down too!
Sign me up. I'll try.
I'll make sure Craptasket dies.

All added to the list!
Will also now be highlighting list names for people who toxx their NaNo completion. It's probably a good motivator to finish strong.
Been participating for several years now and I don't aim missing it this time either! Count me in!
Toxxing myself if I don't finish my 50,000 word novel after November 30th, permaban me till I finish a sequel that's also 50,000 words.
Toxxing myself if I don't finish my 50,000 word novel before the deadline I must make a sequel that's also 50,000 words.
And we have our first toxx!
Just a protip to everyone involved-- while it might be against the rules to start on your 50,000 before November 1st, it's definitely not against the rules to plan out your novel. Those who'd prefer not to think of ideas on the spot should look into chapter outlines and character/world building.
Hey I used to do this, its been forever though; sign me up.
It's been a while since I last wrote something and I've been meaning to get back into it. I can't see myself reaching the deadline, but I'll definitely go for it
Count me in!

Y'know what? Put me down. I might as well have an impetus to finally put down ideas on paper and get something made out of the ideas I've been kicking around.
Hell, I'll give it a shot. Banning Otter if I fail though.
I was thinking about participating then I remembered I have to write college application essays this year so I'm going to have to abstain from participating :(
Would totally love to do it though
I would try but I procrastinate everything and would never get around to doing it.

Trying to NaNo alone is near impossible, but when people are pressuring you to keep going, it's a lot easier. Besides, as long as you stick to the schedule of 1667/day, you'll probably manage to keep yourself afloat. It's easy to give up once you're 7000 words behind, but as long as you keep up a good pacing, you'll likely be fine.

I'm tempted to draw out some character concepts for my story- I personally find it can help sometimes to not only write out a good plan for a story ahead of time, but also to visualize it somehow via sketching/drawing, etc.

I'm the guy that writes a 7 page APA midterm paper 5 hours before it's due.
