A man armed with a gun is believed to have entered a bank in Surrey and taken a number of people hostage. Police said officers and the force helicopter were on the scene at Barclays Bank in Church Road, Ashford. The man is still believed to be inside the bank. Church Road and Fordbridge Road have been closed as a precaution. A witness at the scene said about 11 hostages were released from the bank and came out with their hands tied behind their backs. "Presumably they had been tied up by the raider," said Neil Wood, owner of Ashford Glass, situated about 150 yards from the bank. "It's not clear if there are more still inside. The raider is said to have a sawn-off shotgun." A Surrey Police spokeswoman said a number of people were inside the bank at the time the gunman entered. Det Supt Alan Sharp said: "Public safety is our first priority and we are advising people to stay away." Map showing location of Ashford He said police were on the scene within minutes of receiving the first reports, shortly before 1600 BST. Shafiul Alam, 26, a waiter in nearby Indian restaurant Peppers, said: "I was around there this afternoon and there was a lot of police activity. "There is still a police helicopter circling overhead. "I'm shocked to hear that the incident is still going on. It is a very quiet bank, with not many staff in it. "Ashford is a quiet place compared to other towns around here such as Staines and Feltham."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/surrey/10441024.stm This is in my hometown, literally 5 minutes from me. I've been down there for a few hours and there's a lot to see, lots and lots of police officers (many armed), an armed response unit, and a bomb disposal team. (Apparently he has explosives for the safe which are now a threat- just a rumour I heard). Ashford is a tiny town, so this is a massive event here... It's in middlsex, by the way, although the news reports all say it's West London or Surrey.
Middlsex, lol (User was banned for this post ("Dumb" - SteveUK))
Middlsex, lol
hurrrr sex LOL
Sawn-off shotgun? Pretty badass.
Middlesex is nearly as funny as Cockfosters.
I'm going to go down there again
If this is still going on in the next 24-48 hours I see the special forces going in depending on if the police are inadequate or not. Chances are it wont go to that since (according to the source) there was only one guy who is there. Still, doesnt happen too often in the UK, I hope it works out well for the 11 hostages.
I'm going to go down there again, and try to get an interview with the BBC reporter there. Look out for a Charlie Saunders on TV!
Tell them the gunman molested you when you were young.
Middlesex is a nice area actually. I hope no-one gets hurt.
Maybe hes just there to clean the vault
:ohdear:
It's apparently over now, a man in his 30s was arrested but it's not definite that it was the gunman, we'll have to wait and see. There's a few men standing around in army fatigues, but I think they're just the bomb squad.
You most certainly wouldn't see special forces going in. That's the job of the Armed Response Unit.
Depends. If the situation got too intense, the more well trained people may have been drafted in to do the job. It really depends on the situation
There's a few men standing around in army fatigues, but I think they're just the bomb squad.
Generally the bomb squad would be in black, seems a bit odd. Maybe they were just local military personal from near the area checking it out? Or maybe even curious cadets i guess...
Does the robber realise that hardly any money is actually kept in banks?
Depends. If the situation got too intense, the more well trained people may have been drafted in to do the job. It really depends on the situation
Unless it was a total armed siege, there'd be no need for "special forces" to be deployed. ARU's are adequately trained to deal with hostage and Counter-Terrorist situations. If you're going to make a "but the SAS went in the Iranian Embassy!" rebuttal, we didn't really HAVE armed police then.
Generally the bomb squad would be in black, seems a bit odd. Maybe they were just local military personal from near the area checking it out?
If you're going to make a "but the SAS went in the Iranian Embassy!" rebuttal, we didn't really HAVE armed police then.
I wasnt going to do that :)
If it were a military bomb squad, they'd be in DPM, not all police services have readily available bomb squads.
Considering Middlesex is so close to London. I can guarantee the bomb swuad should have come from there as soon as the issue happened. The army generally doesnt have a large range of trained bomb disposal experts and most of them will no doubt already be deployed. It would be easier to use police experts from the city anyways...
Robbing banks in this day and age is fairly pointless, the chances that you will actually get away with it are very slim.

He was arrested. What a big surprise.
According to new rumours the gun was plastic, I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere official yet, though.
