http://williamsburgsrealestate.com/2010/06/18/the-city-of-hampton-va-is-dealing-with-an-issue-that-dates-back-to-the-wild-wild-west-squatters-2
Urgent Warning!
There has been a recent incident where an organization using the name the Moorish Science Temple of America has illegally entered a home listed for sale, changed the locks and taken over the premises. The incident is under investigation by the Hampton VA Police Department and they have reason to believe that other properties may have been compromised.
The squatters posted a flier in the window of the vacant home that read in part, “possession is nine-tenths of the law, This property has been adverse repossessed” The flier also warned anyone of trespassing.
The group identified in the flier is the Moorish Science Temple of America. The religious group has a Web site which identifies its headquarters as being in Washington. D.C., and it lists “subordinate temples” in Chicago on E. 50th Street and another on N. Spaulding Ave.
The Web site includes the Temple’s history and beliefs, but does not mention anything about property repossessions.
If you have a vacant home for sale here are a few suggestions:
1. Make sure the home is visited by your listing agent frequently to make sure it has not been compromised.
2. Check the locks to make sure they have not been rekeyed.
3. Ask the neighbors to call you if they see anything suspicious.
4. Beware of a potential buyer who refers to themselves as brother or sister and refers to you as brother or sister.
5. If you receive an email from any of the following email addresses: ankh2b1@yahoo.com or crescentu@aol.com report it to the police
According to Detective Flora of the Hampton VA police this organization believes that they have the right to inhabit properties that they do not own, so we are dealing with a very strange situation and you should exercise caution if you believe you have come in contact with this group

According to a friend who is friends with the legal property owner in question:
What has taken place over the last week is so unreal that even I hardly believe it, but none the less the following events are true.
It all started last week as I was on my way to work, and I get a call from my grandmother. She found an ad in the local news paper in the classified section that states that the Moorish Science Temple of America has taken control of 2 properties in 2 local cities, and that one of the addresses is one block over from her house. I wasn't that concerned until I started to think about the name, and the fact that the Moors were Muslims.
So the next day my doctor's wife who lives across the street from the property notices 3 moving vans full of African Americans show up and move a ton of furniture and other "items" in to the house on the property. This property is for sale, and so the wife calls the property owner the following day and asks if they had sold or rented the property, which the property owner replied no to. The gentleman is a family friend, and so the man went over to the house and all the locks have been changed, and the house if full of boxes. Someone had broken in and changed the locks, filled the house with stuff and then left.
At this point he calls the police, and they come over and they spend the next day consulting lawyers on what they can do about all the stuff in the house. After he is told that he can move everything into those PODS and put up no trespassing signs, the police enter the home and start helping catalog everything left in the house.
Problem is there wasn't just furniture. They found weapons, military uniforms, what they described as chemical suits, chemicals, and other items in the house.
Police and Feds have been guarding the house 24/7 since then. Drove by a bit ago, and the guy on duty tonight was sitting on the front steps.
Apparently police in Newport News had a stand off with one of these groups a few weeks ago, but the fact that this group had the items they had, and our proximity to Langley AFB has the feds and locals crawling all over this place.
I never understood why they're called squatters.
Holy crap this is hardcore squatting.
I wasn't that concerned until I started to think about the name, and the fact that the Moors were Muslims.
It is just me or does this seem a wee bit bigoted? And yea, this is some pretty messed up squatting. Normally people do it in abandoned buildings, but this is fucked up
I never understood why they're called squatters.
Maybe because they like to teabag the home owners?
4. Beware of a potential buyer who refers to themselves as brother or sister and refers to you as brother or sister.
hmmm..
that's near my house, and we're renting out soon :ohdear:
...But if they do come to my house they're getting a nutsack full of 12 gauge :clint:
Hmm I don't live far from there. Maybe I should join them.

A wee bit racially charged, no?
Also, is there an actual news article for these claims?

Why is it bigoted, moors are commonly know as the Muslim inhabitants of the Iberian peninsula before being drove out by the Europaens
[editline]06:14PM[/editline]
Also if I came upon that bullshit my self, I would go home, grab my guns, and come back, 12 gauge for the lock, 7.62x39mm for anything that follows if they don't want to get the fuck out

Because it doesn't sound like he meant it in a historical sense, it sounds like "Well that doesn't sound too bad... wait, moors = muslims, OH FUCK"

Because he sees nothing wrong until he makes a connection with muslims?
I'm guessing because ppeople of muslim origin have had a bit more publicity in the past 50 years for killing random people to make some point that nobody is sure of...

Oh I thought it was going to be people squatting to shit in the middle of the street or soemthing
Holy shit, that's crazy. Imagine buying one of these houses and coming to rooms full of ammunition and weapons. :aaa:
...moor = Muslim.
Moorish Science Temple = Muslim Scientologists?
OH GOD :byodood:
:byodood:
"They found weapons, military uniforms, what they described as chemical suits, chemicals, and other items in the house. "
These guys are gonna end up getting fucked up the ass by repeated FBI raids.
I thought they meant squatters as in smack heads in an abandoned building, not some weird-ass cult.
Fucking cults.
I have had experience with this situation. I actually had "friends" move in with me not knowing they had recently became members of The Moorish Divine and National Movement. They had plotted for a year, unbeknownst to me, to try to break up my marriage and take my house from me. They almost succeeded, but I had enough of their "peace, sister" BULLSH*T and kicked them and all their crap out.
Guess where they moved to? They were waiting for this "BIG THING" in VA to go down. Sound familiar. And it's not being bigotted, The Moorish Divine and National Movement are like "people of colors" (cuz they consider hispanics and spanardized indians to be Moores, too) sepratist party. Please, please please make yourself aware of these people and how they seek to undermine unsusspecting, kind hearted individuals.

How exactly does a person steal a house from you? If they lock you out, you just go to the cops and the whole thing is resolved in like an hour.
It's not like a car where they can drive it off and hide it somewhere.

The problem with houses is that, depending on where you live, you may need to show proof of ownership before you can get people kicked out. And if that proof of ownership is INSIDE the house it becomes much more difficult. Again depending on where you live, a driver's license and/or passport with your home address does not qualify as proof of ownership. You may need to track down the original real estate company or your local bureau of housing (or whatever it is called where you live) to get proof of ownership, and that can take several days.
There has been a rash of squatters like this around the Seattle and western Washington area in the past few months. Articles about squatters are becoming common in the Seattle Times.
I thought this would mean an army of people squatting through the streets.
I was wrong.

You could show the cops your credit card, and they'd call the bank to confirm your address. If it matched your ID, that would be more than enough probable cause for them to search your house and obtain the deed.
