New Manga Rock update adds new system to download mangas and you better not update it
30 replies, posted
Manga Rock is an app that allows users to simply download and reading their mangas from hosting websites like MangaEden, Mangareader, etc.
For those who read mangas with this iOS-app (like me) beware of the new version 3.4:
Changelog:
NEW FEATURE: DOWNLOAD MANGA WITH ROCKS
From version 3.4, free users can spend “rocks" to download manga. The new “Rocks” system will replace the old “downloaded slots” system.
- Downloading manga now requires login
- Each manga will cost 20 rocks to download
- For existing free users, all downloaded slots will remain in this new version. Once you finish using all those slots, you will need to use rock to download manga
- If you download a manga with rocks and it gets removed, you will get full rocks refund
[...]
Q6: What will happen to my downloaded manga if I log out of my account?
From version 3.4, you must log in to download manga with rocks. If you log out, all downloaded manga using rocks will be REMOVED.
For example:
- You spend 20 rocks to download manga "Naruto".
- If you log out, all downloaded chapters of "Naruto" will be removed from Manga Rock
- But if you log in again and want to re-download "Naruto", it will be FREE. To know which manga you can re-download for free, go to Account / Rocks History to check.
Q7: How to earn more rocks?
Signing up / Editing your profile after upgrading to version 3.4 will give you 100 rocks for free.
You can always earn more rocks by inviting friends to join Manga Rock, watching some videos, or completing advertising offers.
- Inviting friends to join Manga Rock: 50 rocks / friend.
- Watching videos: 1 rock / video.
- Completing advertising offers with Tapjoy / Supersonic: each offers will reward you different number of rocks.

tl, dr:
- Before 3.4 you could just download as much as you want, as long as there is enough space on your device
- You are now required to have an account and to be logged in when reading (sucks especially for iPad users like me with only Wi-Fi)
- You need to spend those rocks to download mangas and if you want more rocks (to download even more mangas than just 4-5) you need to watch advertisements and videos or inviting friends
I've been using Mangastorm for a while, it's pretty guud

Thanks, I think I'll need something else after this MR update.
What bothers me about this update, despite not having a device to use the program with, is that it sounds like it's actually deleting your downloaded manga chapters every time you log out now.
Solution: Dont allow 3.4 to install. This right here is a textbook example of why automatic updates are bad and why users should screen and install only updates they deem worth installing.

This is exactly what it does and it's horrible (on top of everything else with the update).
A friend of mine paid for the app a few years ago, will this apply to them too?
I've been using Zingbox and its the best thing that has ever happened.

Yes. I also paid for it to get it adfree but it also applies to us.

Too much hassle.

Not ultimately a solution to things like this, leaving your client out of date doesn't mean the server will continue to accept the client's requests forever. Your client is just that - a client, it has no control over the service typically. Better to just move to an alternate service if one exists.

Yep, had the same with Snapchat.
They started to introduce ads, My Memories, more Discovery bullshit and so on so i stopped updating the app till it logged me out and i could not log in because i had a outdated version, luckily i jailbreaked my iPhone with Phantom so i have none of it anymore
skype. all i have to say to that.

It seems to me like a login required "feature" would be a serverside, and if you didn't have the new version then it'd just deny your request without telling you why because whatever packet it's requesting your stuff with just flat-out won't have the required login parameters.
Zingbox is pretty good, and available on both iOS and Android
I'm still surprised that people read manga on mobile devices, seems kinda unweildly unless you were on tablets.

Fuck you, I don't want to deal with half my users not staying up to date then bitching about bugs I fixed in the latest build. And don't even say "well don't have bugs then" it's fucking programming you can't ever fix ALL the bugs, especially when half your fucking clients are on random editions and versions

Actually I'm going to say "don't make shitty updates that worsen the experience then"
FYI on Android there's a free and open-source manga reader called Tachiyomi. It's also on F-Droid.

I think not updating generally is pretty bad but it's pretty obvious why people wind up being very resistant to it, bug fixes/desired features aren't the only thing devs throw in.

I can't read minds as a developer. Fuck you if you think so, because I really fucking hate getting told "well maybe you should of predicted my personal opinion before coding :^)"
If your software is open-source the community that doesn't want your new version can support themselves, so there's that.

And yet they rarely do. Skype's been bitching at me to update for two or three years now, and for two or three years I tell it to fuck off, because if I let it update it will make the UI worse and bring ads to my desktop.
It still connects just fine.
GG Microsoft, and if you do force my hand I already have a discord account...
Funnily enough they have done that before, waaaayyy back in the day, with MSN MEssenger. I was only 12 or 13 at the time, and this was back when updating anything but your OS over the internet was still a new concept, so I never even knew they were there until one day it stopped signing in and I had to get the new client.

I'm going to say, firstly, thanks for being immature about it, and secondly, IDGAF what the devs think about me retaining version control. It's my computer, ultimately, and it's my choice whether or not a program updates.
Chances are if I'm experiencing a bug the first thing I'll do is check for an update that fixes it, if so, it gets installed and all is kopasheeshy. And, hell, if a certain new feature intrigues me, I might install that update to try the new feature...while backing up the old version. But I'm not installing an update simply because it's there, or because you think I should have the latest version, or whatever. If the version I have works properly, does what I want, etc? I have no need to update it and thus will not do so. 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' has been keeping my gaming computers running like swiss watches for over a decade now and I'm not about to change that because one small-time hobby dev threw a swear word at me on an internet forum. Sorry.

Automatic updates are awful and you should never develop a program with such a flawed design philosophy. If your users are saying things like that it's their own damned fault. Make a FAQ or something.

either way, this "solution" is a temporary workaround at best since in this particular situation all it takes is the servers to require login credentials for the old versions to get screwed over. just as i agree that users can do whatever the hell they want using old versions of apps or whatever, i also agree that devs don't have an obligation like at all to support such old versions.
it's very lucky for you guys that the old version just so happens to still work. not that i support what the update adds, though, it's definitely shitty.
I've been using Manga rock definitive for Android since it was pulled from the google play store.
http://www.mangarockapp.com/definitive.php
Doesn't have the same bullshit as the ios version
Do they even have the legal rights to the manga they're charging access for?
No, the whole app is legal on their sides but they are simply using other hosted websites for the mangas. It's a grey zone.
And they are not exactly charging to access them, the paid version simply removed the ads on the app. It's just that they further expand their whole income on advertisements with this update. Paying for rocks now is a way around it. They never charge for the mangas themselves.

You don't have to read minds to know that users aren't going to react well to suddenly have to have an account and/or pay for something that was previously free and easy to use :v:
Also, what are you, twelve?
And yet they rarely do. Skype's been bitching at me to update for two or three years now, and for two or three years I tell it to fuck off, because if I let it update it will make the UI worse and bring ads to my desktop.

Skype's new version doesn't require different login information. it's totally different.
Narr8 did the same shit, adding a virtual currency that users used to get neat profile flairs, then required to read the comics, then eventually forcing you to pay real money for the content outright, regardless of how much of the virtual currency you had saved/used, or how far you were in the series. Didn't bother me much since it was a one time thing per series, but then it moved onto paying for each new chapter. Dropped it like a stone because of that. It's a shame, because Spin was pretty good.
At least that had it's own original content instead of just grabbing from other sites
And no, none of it was saved on the device, so when the service died all the stuff you paid for vanished.
