Uganda has, in the last week, been propelled to the top of the international news agenda, for a brutal rebellion that has not operated in the country for the last five years.
On March 5, American charity Invisible Children posted a video on Youtube, entitled Kony 2012. The 30 minute film, narrated by one of the organisations founders, Jason Russell, campaigns for the arrest of Joseph Kony, the ICC-indicted Ugandan leader of the rebel Lords Resistance Army.
It went viral, and in nine days has attracted over 76 million views, along with a lot of support and also substantial criticism.
Critics argue that the film relies on footage nearly ten-years-old of children fleeing the LRA in northern Uganda, implying the situation remains the same to this day, and so failing to represent the real issues now facing post-conflict Northern Uganda.

LMFAO
Expected an Onion video, thought the thumbed video had the onion logo on it, but then I saw the post.
Still funny.
I wan't to see the guy who made KONY 2012 reply to this
i don't think it's funny
it actually made me a little sick to my stomach
I just don't like things that shove children in front of itself.
fuck White Saviors
Who cares if he's white? He's trying to help them, race shouldn't matter.

how many times have white people gone to africa telling the natives they have intent to help, only to fuck them over again?
i'm all for building schools and housing but the more and more i read about this Kony business the more and more i'm adamant in sticking with a charity that i know does good infrastructure improvement for africans.

"trying to help" simply doesn't cut it when your rhetoric is chock full of white imperialist bullshit
I think the video presses too heavily on the "White man's burden" sort of feeling. Just cause we're a first world nation does mean we have the right to bust into another country and start strutting around. I'd say differently of there was a war going on there (with atrocities), but Kony's gone.

white privileged males saving the world
What they are more angry about is that he isnt even helping them, hes basically getting people to give him money by using their suffering as advertising.
Lol.

and you were so adamantly defending this bullshit too
and you were so adamantly defending this bullshit too
no i was defending the need for there to be action against this war criminal, something which you were dismissing because he was either dead or inactive, neither of which was true.

If they don't want help, that's fine. I'm an isolationist anyway, so naturally I don't believe in the US playing world police.

There's a girl in my thursday night class. She was born in communist Congo and immigrated to South Africa and then on to the US. We had an interesting conversation- me, her, the instructor and another guy- about politics in general and the topic of Africa and American/European 'aid' there. Having lived there herself, she explained pretty well how basically any time western nations try to help Africa at this point, we're only helping those who made the situation bad anyhow. Most Africans don't want our help anyhow- we're looked at as negative because of our relationship with the races and the nations across history.
They look at it like, "You came into our house, broke all of our stuff, stole all of our valuables, and then walked out and left an asshole in charge of the household. We're starting to fix things- slowly, and how we want to do it, but you come by now and then and drop off a check for the asshole who uses it to make things bad again. When you come in and try to help us with your pity, that makes us angry."

One woman I spoke to made the comparison of selling Osama Bin Laden paraphernalia post 9/11 – likely to be highly offensive to many Americans, however well intentioned the campaign behind it.
good comparison

Like I said before, I'm an isolationist. I'm just saying that the guy who made the video has seemingly good intentions, and, even though I don't agree that we should intervene in a foreign nation's affairs, I think it was a nice thing of him to do in the first place.
While the Kony 2012 video may not have been presented in the best way, I think the message still got across to many people, and I still support the Kony 2012 movement. Whether people are for or against the approach of the campaign, we still all want the same thing - Joseph Kony brought to justice. This is not a issue of white people getting involved in other people's business. I believe this is a issue that should be tackled globally, no matter where you're from. All this "Americans are just gonna go into Africa and fuck things up" is nonsense. An issue like this needs first world countries to interfere because people of third world countries don't have the power to do so themselves. I'm not saying that US should just start deploying troops in Africa and force them into the local's lives, but we can't just do nothing either.
I hate the video just because of all the idiots typing "KONY 2012" everywhere I go.
I hate the video just because of all the idiots typing "KONY 2012" everywhere I go.
You gotta admit though, Kony really does need to be arrested at some point. If only there were a charity dedicated towards that capable of not turning into a scam, I reckon I'd donate at some point.
I hate the video just because of all the idiots typing "KONY 2012" everywhere I go.
That's a dumb reason to hate it when there are legitimate concerns with it at every turn.

'White people' , 'white imperialism' , what the do they even mean? when i refer to the japanese when they were imperialists i don't say 'asian imperialism' or something like that. You think every european country/every european was involved with exploiting african countries? idiot. i'm irish, we're white, what have we ever done ? nice generalization..
You think every european country/every european was involved with exploiting african countries? idiot. i'm irish, we're white, what have we ever done ? nice generalization..
obviously you misread something because i never said every single european country or every single european was involved with exploiting african countries, but the evidence is overwhelming that the whiter people on one side of civilization benefited a lot more than the people on the other side of civilization. you're irish and just as much a victim of imperialism, but there's a reason you're not in as bad of a state as africa is in.
I wan't to see the guy who made KONY 2012 reply to this
Never seen that one before.
On topic, white teens intervene 2012.
Found it funny how the Kony's 2012's comments are now disabled.
A lot of people say 'Well the cause is good', and someone even said I was just trying to be a dick by putting the whole KONY thing down.
I'm not against arresting Kony, I'm against this charity who are using Kony to muster huge amounts of money from idiots who dont even know where their money goes. Someone genuinely believed that the money goes towards sending charity workers over there with weapons and equipment to find and capture him.
I'd probably support it if they weren't trying to mislead people into donating by making them think their money actually goes towards capturing Kony when it just goes to relief work like any other charity.
