INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A Head Start Center administrator faces charges of criminal confinement. Police say he duct taped the wrists of a four-year-old girl.
Forty-seven-year-old Darrell Johnson worked as the assistant director at the head start center located at 2447 West 14th Street. Another employee says on December 17th she found that Johnson had locked his office door.
"It was unusual that the door was locked. And the building is partially under construction, so she was able to look through a hole and see this little girl with her wrists bound with duct tape," said Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi.
According to the affidavit, she then told Johnson, "Don't you know you can catch a case for that?" Brizzi says that phrase is slang for "you can get in trouble for that." And Johnson is in trouble. Brizzi has charged him with criminal confinement, a class-c felony. Parents at the head start center are stunned by the charges.
"That makes me a little nervous because I have a little girl that goes to this school," she one parent of a 4-year old girl.
Parents told 24-Hour news 8 Johnson no longer works at the school. We wanted to know if he was fired because of the incident. The doors of the school are locked and visitors must use a buzzer and speak into an intercom. We told the attendant we wanted to speak to the director, and we were told she was coming to the door. We waited for 10 minutes, and the director never came. But many parents still defend the school and the accused administrator.
"I believe they're doing an excellent job, and there are many parents will back what I'm saying", said Ryan Holly, a parent of two children who attend the center.
The prosecutor defends the severity of the charges saying there are no circumstances under which a 4-year should be duct taped. Criminal confinement is a class-c felony with a sentencing range of 2-8 years.
If the child doesn't listen to you the first time, duct tape her hands! Its brilliant!
Criminal confinement? She's four years old and it's a punishment.
That's retarded.
Now if they did that to teenage guys, there'd be a lot less masturbation.
