[QUOTE]US President Barack Obama has declared a "major disaster" in North Carolina and New York state, as cresting rivers and floodwaters threaten communities in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene.
Mr Obama's move allows the two states to tap extra funds for relief efforts.
Raging rivers along the eastern seaboard have given way to extensive flooding and prompted new rounds of evacuations in states like New Jersey.
The storm has been blamed for at least 44 deaths in 13 states.
Irene barrelled along the east coast over the weekend, delivering hurricane force winds in North Carolina and torrential rains in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont, which forced rivers to swell and caused extensive flooding.
Mr Obama had earlier signed an emergency declaration for Vermont following the storm, which also caused nationwide damage estimated at more than $10bn (£6.5bn) and forced a shutdown of New York City.
About two million of people on the US east coast are still without power after Irene wreaked havoc on both small towns and major cities, some far inland.
Rescue operations continued on Wednesday in the north-east, clearing roads and delivering supplies to stranded towns - where mud-coloured floodwaters had earlier washed homes and businesses away from their foundations.
In New Jersey, the Passaic River crested late on Tuesday, causing extensive flooding and prompting rescues in Paterson, the state's third-largest city.
In Paterson, New Jersey, emergency teams were rescuing and evacuating residents after the Passaic River crested 13ft (4m) above its banks - its highest level since 1903.
In Connecticut, the National Weather Service has warned of moderate to major flooding on the Connecticut River. The river crested at Middletown, Connecticut with a level of 15.4ft on Wednesday morning, the weather service said.
Some areas are still at risk of flooding as a series of rivers are expected to crest on Wednesday, the National Weather service says.

While Irene wasn't as bad as expected, the floods were worse.
It's usually the after effects of the hurricanes that's the worst. Which is why it's foolish when people say they're not going to prepare for a hurricane. It's not the hurricane you're preparing for. It's the days sometimes weeks without power, running water, fresh food, and medical supplies.
my power went out friday night and came back on monday night. i live in nc. there are trees and powerlines down everywhere.
I feel bad for those people.
Makes me extra grateful for living in a tornado/earthquake-free country. Of course, we're not completely in the clear, with all that water around here in Holland.

I need to go through Paterson to go to school. I got an email saying how the first day was gonna be delayed to next week due to flooding, but I didn't know it was that bad...

I got it lucky, I only lost power for about 6-10 hours. There's some people on the other side of town that still don't have power though.

I'm also in NC.
Yeah, so my power is still out at my house. I'm at my Sister's right now, eating her food, drinking her soda and using her internet, shower and power because without food in my fridge (It all spoiled) I'm unsure how to feed myself until I get paid Friday. Gas is expensive and it's like everything in my account right than and there.
Have some pictures, some of the other shit I've seen is worse but I was too busy driving to take a picture:

This tree fell as we were driving toward it down the road, so at least we weren't under it.

All the roads around me were flooded, I didn't make it into work Monday night because of all the detours and closed roads.
