The Boeing 737 had taken off from Moscow, and was reportedly trying to land but exploded on impact. Russian officials told local media there were no survivors.
I hope somebody survived. That said, this sort of thing is becoming distressingly common in these times.
I wonder if this was anything like the accident they had a couple years back where a fighter jet crashed into a residential building because the pilot was "lightly buzzed".
...this sort of thing is becoming distressingly common in these times.
Flying is certainly safer than driving.
Flying is certainly safer than driving.
When I'm driving I don't suddenly fall 30,000 feet out of the sky.
When I'm driving I don't suddenly fall 30,000 feet out of the sky.
You generally don't when you're flying, too.
When I'm driving I don't suddenly fall 30,000 feet out of the sky.
Yeah but you are speeding along a road in a metal box with thousands of other unpredictable speeding metal boxes just feet away coming from all directions. And some of these metal boxes are controlled by people who are intoxicated and cant be trusted with metal boxes, or people that are just preoccupied with their phones, or doing makeup, or eating, or talking. And some don't even respect the rules of the road.
Flying is certainly safer than driving.
looks like it's time to be specific again: mass disasters of this nature are becoming quite common, whether they be on the roads, in the air, in a train, or due to nature flipping out. A little comprehension to that point doesn't hurt either. Enjoy your Informative rating.
I have never liked the flying vs driving thing, because while flying the situation is 100% out of your control and there arent really any precautions you cant take against it. I'm not disputing the statistics, but the statement literally doesn't help me and if anything makes it worse since I start thinking about it more, also I wonder how many people have said that exact same statement about a flight they died in. What I find more comforting is thinking about how the air hostesses and pilots have likely flown hundreds of times with no problems, and they don't want to crash and burn any more than I do so even if something does go very wrong the pilot will likely do everything he can to make sure we live. I don't know where it all went wrong, I used to love flying and went on holidays loads as a kid, nowadays I'm close to having an anxiety attack for the entire flight / every time there is a tiny bit of turbulence. If you are in the UK at least, you can go to your doctor and get small amounts of diazepam (Anti anxiety meds) prescribed to help with various fears. I think I'm going to do that before I go on holiday next year since I get anxious just thinking about it 6 months before.
When I'm driving I don't suddenly fall 30,000 feet out of the sky.
Yeah like this plane - it fell 30,000 feet out of the sky and landed on a runway. What a coincidence.
When I'm driving I don't suddenly fall 30,000 feet out of the sky.
it is statistically tens of times safer to fly in an airplane than to drive in a car, dumb anecdotes don't change that
it is statistically tens of times safer to fly in an airplane than to drive in a car, dumb anecdotes don't change that
I'd bet it's even more than tens of times.
Source says this crash was with a smaller airport, basically the equivalent of a regional airport. The problem with these types of airports is they don't require as many hours as a commercial airline company. These airports are very common for younger pilots trying to get enough hours to fly for the bigger airlines. My best guess is that the pilot was horribly inexperienced and fucked up. As for the planes vs cars debate. Planes are drastically safer than cars and the while "the drop from 30,000" feet argument is retarded. Planes maintain flight by generating lift from the dynamic effect of air on the wings. I'm not sure if you have ever looked at a plane, but they have wings. FAA regulations require that any plan (in the US at least) has to be at least 100 miles from an emergency runway or airport at all times. Mainly because a plane at 30,000 going 500mph when both of its engines die has a tendency to be able to glide long distances. I say both engines because planes have one engine fail all the time. Of course they don't tell you when it happens because it would cause panic and it is no big deal at all because other that lift off, the plane doesn't really need both engines as badly as you would think.
It's weird because landings these days are practically always computer-aided, especially in modern planes such as the 737.
Landing is the most difficult part of the flight for a pilot. All though landing is computer aided to an extent, the pilot still is doing almost all of the work.
The thing about crashing in the car is that you have a chance of the survival or at least way bigger chances than plane malfunction or crash. It must be pretty terrifying knowing that you will crash in several minutes and there's nothing you can do about it.

Those dam gays are at it again
Here's a video of the crash, apparently: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b12_1384773205
