An earthquake centered about six miles northwest of Westwood was felt across Los Angeles this morning. The quake, which occurred at 6:25 a.m. local time, was initially reported to be a 4.7 magnitude by the U.S. Geological Survey; they downgraded it a few minutes ago to a 4.4 magnitude. It was a little more than 5 miles deep, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of any earthquake-related injuries or damage, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
Source. A 4.4 isn't much to speak of really, but these news anchors' reactions betray how terrifying an earthquake can be if you've never experienced one. I like how the guy freaks the fuck out
In other news, a 4.4 magnitude quake has just struck LA. Tune in after the commercial break to hear about this heartwarming story about a three-legged dog who saved a baby.
That was pretty interesting to watch. Denmark never has earthquakes of anything over 4, and I've personally never been in a situation where I actually noticed any of the ones we have had, so seeing people react was pretty neat.
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
I'm sure there's some joke about Mother Nature, alcohol, and St. Patrick's Day, but I can't really think of one.
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
When it comes to earthquakes, especially around the Los Angeles zone it's really worth to be better safe than sorry.
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
It's not much, but it's always an odd feeling to feel EVERYTHING below your feet moving.
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
That is strong for an urban environment.
Felt one earth quake in my entire life, when that rather largeish one hit the DC area a few years ago. Was really spooky considering I had no idea what was going on. I wanted to bolt out of my house with my mom and the dog, but my mom figured it was safer to stay holding on to the kitchen table in the middle of the house with a weak spot in the roof. Heh. :v:
That is strong for an urban environment.
Buildings in LA are built to withstand much stronger earthquakes than that one. I mean shit, I'm at work in Costa Mesa today and couldn't even feel it. Actually, if the quake happened at 6:30 I was still in Fullerton which is basically right next to LA and I didn't even know it happened till now.
That is strong for an urban environment.
Not really. 4.4 is not going to cause any significant damage beyond maybe knocking a few things off of shelves. It's when you get well into the 5s and above that you start seeing problems.
Funny to see them instantly start reporting on what just happened to them
It's not much, but it's always an odd feeling to feel EVERYTHING below your feet moving.
In Peru most of our buildings never go past 10 floors, so they aren't really noticeable. Most of Lima, at least, is built on top of a giant alluvium, product of another giant landslide. You gotta dig really deep to find some solid ground, and nobody wants to build a skyscraper that would crash down in the next big earthquake.
That is strong for an urban environment.
Depends on how you make your buildings. A magnitute 4 down here gets, at best, a small article in the news.
Love the mans insta reaction
that's what I call breaking news
That guy's reaction is great, I keep replaying the part where his face explodes in worry.
Haha i was still waking up when this hit. Asshole tried to spill my coffee :(
The best face of the earthquake.
Oh wow, kind of neat to see reporters reporting on the fly. I felt an earthquake before but I didn't even know it was one, I just thought someone was shaking the table and no-one else mentioned it. Wasn't until I got home and read it online that I knew it happened.
But you know, these last days there's been a lot of minor earthquakes in the Ring of Fire. There was a 6.5 yesterday, in Chile, that was felt all the way to Arequipa. And three days ago, a 6.2 hit Japan.
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
No San Francisco wasn't totally destroyed once or had an earthquake occur during the World Series and isn't built on a huge fault line or anything
I love when the camera pulls back and you see the empty chair on the left slowly spinning where the third guy was sitting before. Guy was out of there in a flash.
I like how the guy freaks the fuck out
You would too if there was hundreds of pounds of lights and equipment above you
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
you are not the earthquakes in your area
his panic face is just amazing
You guys consider a 4.4 a strong earthquake? Pffffttt
Usually, when you feel an earthquake, you hide under the nearest desk instead of checking a seismograph.
Been in a few quakes over 4. Most notable was a 7 when I was like 10. Woke me up in the middle of the night, come home the next morning and everything in my room was rearranged
