The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a proposed plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement.[1] ACTA would establish a new international legal framework that countries can join on a voluntary basis[2] and would create its own governing body outside existing international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) or the United Nations.[1][3] Negotiating countries have described it as a response "to the increase in global trade of counterfeit goods and pirated copyright protected works."[2] The scope of ACTA is broad, including counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet.[4] Because it is in effect a treaty, ACTA would overcome many court precedents defining consumer rights as to "fair use" and would either change or remove limitations on the application of intellectual property laws. After a series of draft text leaks in 2008, 2009 and 2010 the negotiating parties published the official version of the current draft on 20 April 2010.[5] The idea to create a plurilateral agreement on counterfeiting was developed by Japan and the United States in 2006. Canada, the European Union and Switzerland joined the preliminary talks throughout 2006 and 2007. Official negotiations began in June 2008, with Australia, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and Singapore joining the talks. It is planned for negotiations to finish in September 2010.[6]
I hope you guys enjoyed the pirating while it lasted, because it seems soon enough this is all going to come to an end. :sigh:
I never pirated anything. I only used torrents for my Linux distros, and I hope the same goes for you!
You realize this is the least likely place in which this will be adhered to?
I've never pirated/torrented anything. :buddy:
I've never pirated/torrented anything. :buddy:
never? unlikely.
No warez here. :smug: (User was banned for this post ("Knows he's getting banned for being too damn smug about pirating" - Jaanus))
You realize this is the least likely place in which this will be adhered to?
Agreed, as much as downloading a sample MP3 file will have the FBI covertly on your ass.

ಠ_ಠ No.
Just don't get caught pirating shit. Torrent Linux distros all the time, and if you get shut down, say you're distributing fair trade stuff.
Fuck my life, this is actually going to go through? :smithicide:
So now I have to buy all of my Mp3s?
It's a good thing most of my favorites are album selects, or I would be in a whole load a shit right now. Thank the internet for skreemr and pandora.
I dont get it, How does this effect anything? Pirating will always be there, besides there's tons of anti piracy measures now a days, and pirates happily skip over them without the slightest worry. How is this any different than those measures? Honestly.
Fuck anything that's meant to fight piracy. It either invades your privacy or makes it worse for those who actually pay (DRM and such). Besides, I believe in free distribution of information. The companies should find ways to work around it, like Steam and Spotify.
I can't pirate because I'm to stupid to opperate a Torrent. (Lack of Patience) Edit: Agreed with above poster.
Fuck my life, this is actually going to go through? :smithicide:
It will most likely only be in effect for a few months, it should be shut down through most international constitutions. And the US constitution is a mad bitch to when it comes to these things. The thing is though, we just hope the right people will come out to fight. Not corrupt senators and world leaders.
Deal with it.
I've never pirated/torrented anything. :buddy:
Pirating and torrenting are not synonymous.
Right so, what is this actually going to do?
Just don't upload and you'll be fine. Not that I'm promoting warez or anything, just saying that that's how they trace you n shit, by uploading.
Even if you don't pirate anything, you're still going to get arrested for piracy, based on "imminent infringement" which is where they prosecute you for searching for music/software even if you aren't searching for torrents.
Don't blame the people who pirate games to play them, or people who pirate movies to just watch them. Blame the people who sell them.
I can't pirate because I'm to stupid to opperate a Torrent. (Lack of Patience)
Lack of patience? If you find one with a enough seeds, you can download a whole Linux distro in about 10 minutes at 2 MB a sec. Those are speeds not to be trifled with.

The Pirates will get pass it. Nothing can stop them.

Even your ISP This also most likely means even if your on the pirate party's network you are no longer safe. So say goodbye to wikileaks and other websites of the like.

ACTA is going to turn into a censoring tool, no doubt.
Yeah dude, this bill means government censorship and monitoring of your Internet usage.
So big brother is watching us, whats new? I honestly don't think this changes anything, this probably wont even go into effect/ stay in effect long because it breaks piracy so much. There is only one way to stop piracy, and thats shut down the internet, which isn't possible.
Even if this does, somehow, do what everyone says it will, no agency in the world has the man power to enforce this kind of shit. They'll make examples of a few people, and then the pirates will seem like Robin Hood characters.
