The debate was the first since sexual harassment allegations emerged against Mr Romney's chief rival, Herman Cain. He dismissed the accusations, calling them "character assassination." To a chorus of boos from the audience - aimed at the CNBC interrogators and not at Mr Cain - the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza said his character was beyond reproach. "The American people deserve better than someone being tried in a court of public opinion based on unfounded accusations." The biggest drama of the evening came when Texas Governor Rick Perry stumbled over his lines, finding himself unable to name the three federal departments he would eliminate if he became president - a key policy and a regular part of his stump speeches. "The third agency of government I would - I would do away with education, the... commerce... commerce and, let's see. I can't. The third one, I can't. Sorry. Oops," he said. The answer he was looking for, he told moderators later, was the Department of Energy. No Europe 'bailouts' The Michigan debate, staged by the cable business channel CNBC, was held at Oakland University in Rochester. In a series of questions focused on pressing economic issues, candidates discussed a range of topics from the eurozone debt crisis to the domestic housing market to bailouts for the domestic auto industry.
No Europe 'bailouts'
They generally agreed that the US should not "bail out" Europe, but warned that budget deficits in the US could create a similar crisis to the one faced by eurozone nations. Candidates also used the time to reprise their calls for flat tax plans, social security reform and the repeal of President Barack Obama's healthcare law. Each candidate was asked specifically what they would do about healthcare costs immediately after repealing the law. Mr Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, called for individual state decisions on health care laws, while former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman argued for better access to medical records as a way of improving care. The debate came nearly two months before the first votes are cast in the Iowa caucuses to nominate a Republican nominee.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15669442
If you look closely you can see his presidential dreams falling apart before your eyes.

What is it with Republican candidates and getting rid of the Department of Education? They clearly need it the most.
He is so bad at debates, I almost feel sorry for him too.
god I hate all of these candidates so much
I like the guy in the backround. " . . .oh my."
I found Gawker's headline to be particularly suiting:
Watch Rick Perry’s Campaign Explode in an Excruciating Brain Fart
So this is the world we live in, one in an economic crisis where congress does nothing but bicker and our idiot politicians can't even remember what they stand for.
I think it was the department of silly walks that he forgot
Other than Perry, who are the main competitors to Ron Paul? Bachmann and Cain are an absolute joke so i'm not even going to count them.

thank god we could get the rambling fat man out of the way early on
Ron Paul for pres 2012.

America scares me. Some one that stupid actually got a chance to get in the race for presidency.
What is it with Republican candidates and getting rid of the Department of Education? They clearly need it the most.
The system failed to educate them, so NO-ONE deserves education. Or that's what they believe.
What is it with Republican candidates and getting rid of the Department of Education? They clearly need it the most.
Educated people don't vote republican.
Other than Perry, who are the main competitors to Ron Paul?
What is it with Republican candidates and getting rid of the Department of Education? They clearly need it the most.
Because Republican's clearly didn't have a good Education and they think they came out alright.
What is it with Republican candidates and getting rid of the Department of Education? They clearly need it the most.
I remember seeing a study that linked more education to being more likely to vote for a left leaning party, so the joke I've always made is that right leaning parties want to scrap education to get more people voting for them. But in reality it's probably more of a "It should be under the states control!" thing (Which just creates a fragmented, complicated system, but meh)

If people like Rick Perry, Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann are legitimate choices for the most powerful job of the face of the earth, we should start over!
I don't consider Rick Perry dumb per say, but he's a horrible debater and has always been known as horrible debater/public speaker. He's like that kid in Highschool who gets all nervous when he's about to present to his class. I'm not a GOP person, just sayin
I love how Ron Paul's just giving him that wry smile the whole time he manages to completely blunder what he was talking about.
Educated people don't vote republican.
Apart from the rich, but, of course, they're not people!
It's scary how my friend is saying that he might vote for Perry just because it would be hilarious to watch him humiliate myself. Scary world we live in.
Ron Paul totally used the Jedi Mind Trick on Perry and messed his ass up.
so uh is america like a clown car now or
Ron Paul always looks kooky when he does anything more physically demanding then standing at the podium. When he held up 5 fingers I laughed as much as I cringed at Perry's lapse [sp]lack[/sp]of thought.
Apart from the rich, but, of course, they're not people!
What face feeding rich person would vote for a party that would take away some of their wealth so they can't buy their 4th farrari.
