Phil Robertson of "Duck Dynasty" fame hasn't gone anywhere, and now he's delivered a tirade against atheists. Robertson was the keynote speaker at the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast in Florida, where hundreds of attendees paid up to $100 a plate to hear him speak. The "Duck Dynasty" dad posited a gruesome hypothetical situation in which an atheist family's home is broken into.
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/03/24/phil-robertson-duck-dynasty-hate-speech_n_6934164.html Whole speech in article.
Rich rednecks with more money than brains. No surprises there.
Nothing terribly surprising there. Just another religious person who can't comprehend the idea that religion and morality aren't inseparable.
Oh snap
... Again? You'd think he would have learned his lesson the first time he did this. Guess not.
Oh look, an old redneck said things and old redneck would say.
He should stick to ducks.
A lot of people seem to think that atheism and moral nihilism aren't completely different things.
A lot of people seem to think that atheism and moral nihilism aren't completely different things.
Well, moral nihilism is a conclusion many atheists, myself included, come to. However, we can make a conscious choice of whatever principles we choose to live by, with or without any intrinsic value. Phil Robertson doesn't seem to understand how the world works or people think.
This title is very misleading. This isn't "hate speech".
This title is very misleading. This isn't "hate speech".
Sure it is. It is a heavy, defaming generalization targeting a group based on religious denomination (or lack thereof).
Sure it is. He's not advocating for violence or anything like that.
Hate FILLED Speech. Not the legal definition of hate speech.
So show me the point in his speech that clearly shows that he "hates" atheists. I'm not going to defend his use of an analogy, because it was stupid. But it's far from showing hate.
According to the Bible, similar atrocities were carried out in Canaan but it was completely moral because god told the Jews to do it.

memes for jesus good lord what
According to the Bible, similar atrocities were carried out in Canaan but it was completely moral because god told the Jews to do it.
I believe that we should blame the ancient Jews for the things that the ancient Jews did. The region was hardly stable, everyone and their uncle was politically-driven and militarized. Nothing was moral about it, it was all political. I really hate the whitewashing in modern Christianity. You'd think people would realize that slaughtering thousands of innocents to fulfill a foreskin quota so the king would give you his daughter is all kinds of fucked up. Christianity seems to take a lot of these men as an example, but really they're recorded to show their failings as well as their successes. If you gloss over their failures, like being complete sociopaths, you don't actually learn anything about being a better person.
... Again? You'd think he would have learned his lesson the first time he did this. Guess not.
This dude doesn't give a fuck, he was rolling in cash before and he's only rolling in more now. He's a TV star with no incentives to not say stupid shit, he has an entire business to pay his bills. The TV series is just icing on the cake.
I believe that we should blame the ancient Jews for the things that the ancient Jews did. The region was hardly stable, everyone and their uncle was politically-driven and militarized.
I'm talking about what the Bible itself says.
memes for jesus good lord what
Not as bad as the shit my relatives from El Salvador post to facebook. Wait until you see ragecomics 3 years after people began to hate, but in spanish; "memes catolicos"
He used an analogy to try and prove a point that's obviously false. He's not advocating for violence or anything like that.
You don't have to be inciting someone to violence for it to be hate speech, "all jews are dumb" doesn't necessarily incite people to violence but it's certainly hate directed towards them.
Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnic origin, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation.

memes for jesus good lord what
I followed this really Christian man from my gym on Twitter and most of his tweets end with #repsforjesus
I'm talking about what the Bible itself says.
I'm not disagreeing, that's what it says. Part of the purpose originally was to provide a written record for everything the ancient Hebrews did. The Septuagint was as much a religious text as it was a cultural and historical one. Only makes sense that their military exploits would be recorded, and then aligned with their religion to give future generations a sense that they were doing it for more than just control. It's really, eerily similar to our own Manifest Destiny. Doesn't make what they did right morally, even if it was religiously motivated. The Jews were monotheists, but they needed their Mars as much as they needed a Jupiter.
The part where it's a fantasy about an atheist family having their children raped and murdered in front of them.
Yeah, that's not what it is. It's a dumb analogy to try and scare people into becoming religious. Southern uber-baptists all use the same scare tactics of "if you don't follow our religion, the world will end." I don't agree with his analogy, and I think it's dumb as shit, but to pretend it's "hate" oriented or anything like that is just as stupid.

I think this guy just has a fantasy about being tied to a chair and having his junk cut off.
It's stupid but I don't think it's necessarily hateful. It kind of helps to know people like this to understand the mindset. They were raised very religious and taught that morality comes from God. It's not hate in the sense the article is trying to spin it as, but it is a dumb thing to say. Quoting my below post for clarity:
He's not saying it's their fault for being atheists, he's saying he doesn't understand how they'd find a problem with it because they're atheists and don't have morals on account of a lack of belief in God - because he's been taught that morality stems from the fear of being judged before God after you die. That's why I said it's a stupid thing to say and it's an exceptionally bizarre and complex way to say it but it's not hateful.
