WASHINGTON — Hours before a candlelight vigil honoring the memory of officers killed in the line of duty, police have joined with elected leaders urging Congress to create a nationwide Blue Alert system.
Patterned after the Amber Alert for missing children and Silver Alert for missing seniors, Blue Alert would quickly notify the public when a search is on for a suspect who seriously injures or kills a law enforcement officer in the line of duty.
Law enforcement officers from across the nation have gathered in Washington and this year's candle light vigil is the 25th annual ceremony. The names of more than 19,000 officers are etched on the wall.
120 law enforcement officers were killed while on duty in 2012 -- 201 in prior years -- but identified last year as having lost their lives in the line of duty.
shouldn't there be an alert for anyone, no matter who they killed?
I feel like this has the potential to create some crime simply out of confused descriptions of the suspect. Their hearts are definitely in the right place though.
are amber alerts effective?
Law enforcement officers don't deserve their own alert any more than normal folks do, it's not a bad idea, but it's not a good one yet.
Cops don't need anything more than what they already have.

They have an effect

If the FCC approved a proposal to send WEA alerts to people's phones, of course

They have worked in the past. The main reasoning behind them- if it is an actual kidnapping the (live) recovery rate approaches near zero in a matter of hours.
I'm not sure the same reasoning would apply to cop killers, and I doubt an alert system would help in these instances.

them "working" doesn't prove effectiveness. is the rate of live recoveries greater with an amber alert system?

also does the rate of false incarcerations increase under an amber alert system?
