Department wrongly announced that section of law threatening people with life imprisonment had been repealed A 165-year-old law that threatens anyone calling for the abolition of the monarchy with life imprisonment is technically still in force – after the Ministry of Justice admitted wrongly announcing that it had been repealed. The Treason Felony Act 1848 has been the subject of repeated legal confusion this century. It was the subject of a high court challenge by the Guardian in 2003. This week, in a footnote to a list of new offences, the MoJ said the powers in section 3 of the Act had finally been swept away in a belated, legislative pruning of unwanted laws. The act – which makes it a criminal offence, punishable by life imprisonment, to advocate abolition of the monarchy in print, even by peaceful means – has not been deployed in a prosecution since 1879.
http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/dec/13/calling-abolition-monarchy-illegal-uk-justice-ministry
At least the current monarch of the UK isn't a tyrannic despot.
Abolition the useless institution.
I'll see you in court
Last time that didn't work so well for ya.
Last time that didn't work so well for ya.
We never went to court, you shot at us and threw our tea in the water. Counselling would of been a better choice.

I thought nobility was a bunch of parasites? Why keep them around?
Is this also law in Australia, Canada and new Zealand ?
Is this also law in Australia, Canada and new Zealand ?
Probably the whole commonwealth..
Is this also law in Australia, Canada and new Zealand ?
I hope not, because we Australians openly debate about becoming a republic all the time.
I hope not, because we Australians openly debate about becoming a republic all the time.
They would just say Australia is a prison colony again and let you guys stay where you're at :v:
I hope not, because we Australians openly debate about becoming a republic all the time.
Police got a lot of arresting to do
They would just say Australia is a prison colony again and let you guys stay where you're at :v:
It's only our logic to use a hot, tropical expansive paradise island as a fucking prison whilst we keep this shitty rock. Which is always fucking overcast or raining bar 3.5 days of summer per year. Not that I'm bitter or anything.
Police got a lot of arresting to do
Where are they going to put them? they're already in prison

This is also the same country which can arrest you if you don't have a bale of hay in the back of your car
This is also the same country which can arrest you if you don't have a bale of hay in the back of your car
or picking up a deer you hit with your car, but the second passer can legally.
I mean, technically it's still illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day as well. We're a very old country, it would probably take a long time to dig through all the dusty old lawbooks to find all the silly laws and repeal them. I doubt it would be enforced, and I doubt Her Majesty would want it to be.
I thought nobility was a bunch of parasites? Why keep them around?
well, yeah, they are. the UK's nobility was smart enough to give concessions to the people at the right time allowing them to survive
I thought nobility was a bunch of parasites? Why keep them around?
Because they bring in loads of money.

That was also when they took the death penalty off the three remaining crimes that carried it (high treason, piracy and arson of a royal dockyard), even though the death penatly had already been outlawed.
I thought nobility was a bunch of parasites? Why keep them around?
The monarchy brings a massive amount of tourism to England. The economic benefits of having them probably far outweigh what we spend on them.
Also, people are too lazy to have another peasant revolt and storm Buckingham palace.
