So you think you know what fencing is eh?
Of course you do, and of course you know that there are three different weapons, all with different rules, styles, techniques, and practices. Also the fencers are different per weapon, and some are more popular than others.
Oh wow really? Teach me o' wise one!
Alright, so the three types of weapons are:
Foil

Easily the most recognizable and popular weapon. Typically bouts (matches in other words) are very long, with each touch (hit) being up to a minute or more in length. They typically stand around for some time, tapping each other's blade for a bit, and then run in for a suicide attack, called a flesche. The Foil's blade is slightly wobbly, and it's grip is either straight, or in a pistol grip like configuration. You can only hit the chest area, and is effected by right of way, which I will explain later. Historically, this is the first weapon to switch to electric reels (another thing I will explain later).
Épée

Probably the second most recognizable and popular weapon. Historically this was created because people didn't like the killing aspect of dueling. The whole body is a target, and the blade is hard, with the same types of grips as foil. There are very little rules, other than no "aggressive" physical contact, and you can even score a point by hitting someone in the toe. Although the rules are leniant, matches take about as long, although slightly shorter than foil.
Sabre

This is basically the batshit insane version of épée. The upper torso is a target, except the hands. rules are similar to foil, with right of way, and no bodily contact. However, bouts last 10 to 20 seconds, topping out at around 40 seconds. As such, this is a very fast paced weapon and has quite the reputation among fencers. The weapons has a hard blade, an extended bell-guard (The thing that protects the hand), and is slightly shorter than épée.
Oh boy, what are some of the things you wanted to explain?
Well, right of way basically means who has the right to score if both people have a touch. In épée, it's just decided who has the first touch, but in foil and sabre, it doesn't work that way. Whoever starts moving towards the opponent first gets right of way first. However, a parry (block), a beat (hitting the opponent's blade), or when the opponent stops will shift right of way over to the other person.
With scoring, you are hooked up to an electric reel and there is a counter which tracks who hits who first, and what the score is.
Equipment
General Equipment

1. Jacket
- This is worn to protect the torso. It is usually worn over an under arm protector (7).
2. Glove
- You wear one glove, and you wear it on the hand that you hold your weapon with.
3. Body Cord
- You wear this to plug yourself in to a scoring reel. It goes through your arm, and clips in to your weapon.
4. Weapon (An épée is pictured in this)
- You typically have two weapons, just in case if a blade breaks midway through a tournament or one fails for whatever reason
5. Pants
- These shorts have suspenders build in, and are worn under the jacket. These are usually one-size-fits-all.
6. Mask
- This is arguably the most important piece of safety equipment. As such, these masks have to stand 1000 Newtons of force. There is no protection behind the head, and they are usually padded on the inside
7. Underarm Protector
- This is worn under the arm that you fence with. It is very helpful with protecting your armpit, which has several arteries and lymph nodes, and also protects half of your torso.
History
Swordplay started in greco-roman culture, as they used light spears and light swords. Those people were taught in schools called ludi. With the fall of the Roman empire also came the fall of swordplay, as small and light swords were phased out. Fencing started in Spain around 1471, when light swords like rapiers came back in, as gunpowder phased out heavy armor. In the 16th century, fencing exploded in popularity worldwide. Italian fencers also invented fencing positions, (sixte, quarte, octave, septime).

The Queen Catherine de Médicis of France had many Italian fencing masters come to France and develop fencing there. She was so successful that in 1567, her son, King Charles IX, officially recognized the French Fencing Academy, and awarded many hereditary titles to the new French fencing masters. These new masters were the first to classify and define fencing attacks and parries. In 1573 Henry de St. Didier was the first french fencing master to publish a treatise, and one of the first to advocate heavy use of the Épeé instead of the Rapier.

My friend does sabre for Great Britain. Our school is quite good at fencing so we have a few seeded people.
I tried fencing in middle school, ended up prodding a girl in between the pads on her vest and really messed her up. Not my sport sadly.
I did fencing for a while.
I absolutely detest pistol grips.
I love fencing <3

I've heard that from some fencers, why do you not like them?
I've heard that from some fencers, why do you not like them?
I personally like to have a solid grip on the sword, with a straight handle you have more of your grip coming from your thumb. Pistol grip I can see has more "finesse" but requires more of a grip with your two fingers.
I used to fence, but my parents got too poor to pay for my fencing lessons. Even if they get the money to put me back, I'm not going because my friends have surpassed me now.
Interesting. I'd like to try fencing someday.
I took Kendo.

A Kendoists from my class and a Fencer from the next class fought in a match once. The Kendoists lost.
