• [Canada] Prices of Internet is going to increase
http://www.competitivebroadband.com/ Please spread the word The monthly fee you pay to Bell, Rogers, Telus, Shaw, Videotron, Cogeco, or any of the other telephone or cable companies, or to an independent ISP like Acanac,Teksavvy, Primus, or other similar smaller providers to access the internet is about to undergo a potentially massive increase in the monthly rate. Bell has recently applied to the CRTC (the body responsible for overseeing telecommunications) for a change to the fees they charge for internet access for both Bell's own Sympatico customers, and for customers of independent ISP's. The independent ISP's lease lines and capacity from Bell to fulfill their own customer's internet needs. So, why is this of issue if you are a Rogers, Telus, Shaw, or indeed any non-Bell customer? The rate increase that Bell has applied for not only increases the monthly fee payable to Bell by up to 75%, but also fundamentally changes the the terms and conditions under which the rates are applied for both wholesale & retail customers. If the increase and the changes in the terms & conditions are granted by the CRTC it will most certainly be used as a precedent by the other telecom companies when they apply for their own similar rate increases in the months ahead. It would also substantially lessen competition in the internet market by forcing out smaller independent companies by making it uneconomical for them to lease circuits from Bell or any of the other telco/cable companies. This would adversely affect hundreds of thousands of people and businesses across the country who purchase their internet access from smaller ISP's. Depending on the amount of internet 'data' you consume each month, your monthly charge from your internet provider could increase anywhere from 0% through 75% per month overnight (low usage users will see no change, moderate usage users will see an automatic additional $22.50 + tax charge on their month bill). And when the second part of Bell's rate increase (which is part of the rate increase request) kicks in next year, those of you who are heavy internet users (lots of YouTube, downloading other videos or files, on-line gaming, or listening to streaming radio, etc...), your monthly rate could increase by several hundred percent - pushing your monthly internet access fees upwards of $2-300 per month (or viewed a little differently, pretty close to the amount of a car payment). On the economics side, the cost of suppyling internet access has never been cheaper than it is now - the cost per bit of data transferred is lower than it ever has been and is continuing to plummet even as new technologies such as fiber optic cables are replacing traditional copper wire to carry data, tv, and voice traffic. Just the normal depreciation and amortization of the older equipment being replaced by Bell et. al. is more than enough to fund the new fiber cables, the new faster more powerful routers and switches used as their replacements. In an OECD study released last month, Canada was the 3rd from the bottom globally in value for money in internet access, and the Bell rate increase, and subsequent increases by the other incumbent telco/cable companies will make the Canadian situation even worse. There is no economic justification for wanting to increase internet access rates by 75% or more during a recession, other than the desire to simply have more revenue. I won't get into the monopolistic aspects at this time, but I will point out that if Bell's rate increase is allowed to go through the vast majority of Canadians will be left with just 2 choices of how to get internet access - either the local telephone company or the local cable company - We all know too well how a duopoly or oligarchic behaviour benefits the consumer - just look at gasoline prices from the four or five so-called competitive oil companies operating in this country. Below is a link to a petition to the CRTC - urging the CRTC to deny Bell's rate increase application. Please put your name on the petition, and encourage your friends and relatives to do so as well. http://www.competitivebroadband.com/ Today it's Bell seeking the increase - tomorrow it will be Rogers, Shaw, Telus, et. al. - and then you'll have no independent ISP's to turn to - the one's who are currently keeping the incumbents somewhat honest via competition in the market. Remember - a duopoly is not competition. http://www.competitivebroadband.com/
Source: https://community.acanac.com/acanac/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=10703 I bolded the important parts. Basically an phone/internet/tv company called Bell in Canada is suggesting to the Canadian government or the CRTC (which handles Canada's media distribution basically) that they should raise prices of internet depending on how much you use. So you will probably have to pay the normal rate now or a slightly lower rate and then they will charge you according to how much is downloaded/uploaded. There is no reason why a company such as Bell should be suggesting this especially in a recession economy (although Canada wasn't as affected as our neighbors down south). Its just retarded. For all you Canadian Facepunchers out there. Sign the petition! Make a difference. Also the post is from my Internet provider which is vastly cheaper than the generic providers available in Canada. Ouch. Sorry, Canada.
Well that sucks, eh?
ok this is really bad, i fucking hate bell, im with them and i can say that there one of the badest internet provider ever, like they suck and they still trying to do shit like that. im going with videotron next time >:(
Jesus Christ, 75% for internet? In a recession...
I doubt any of you have actually read the original post. Way to go guys. If you did however, I'm sorry. You're a fucking fast reader.
Bell has a monopoly on pretty much all communication in this country, and it's hurting our internet and phone infrastructure. We need the government to step the fuck up. I wish our CRTC was more in touch with what the consumers want, but they're just eating out of Bell's hand.

ffffffff.
What country is generally considered to have the best internet infrastructure?
What country is generally considered to have the best internet infrastructure?
One of the Scandinavian countries I believe. Like Sweden/Norway/Finland
son of a bitch
I hate Canadian ISPs, we don't have enough competition here like in the American market.
Whoa whoa what the FUCK Our household is very internet-heavy (I torrent lots of stuff and play a lot of online games, my mother spends a lot of her spare time playing MMOs), and this is seriously going to fuck us over. God damn I am mad.
What country is generally considered to have the best internet infrastructure?
I heard S. Korea has good internet.
One of the Scandinavian countries I believe. Like Sweden/Norway/Finland
So in Sweden you have robberies with helicopters, gangs of girls raping you on the streets, and great internet? It's like everything a Facepuncher has ever dreamed of located in one convenient place.
FUCKING BULLSHIT. You fucking Americans get internet so fucking cheap. I had 10Mb/s (was actually 6.7Mb/s) for about a year and it cost around 80$ a month. Then my ISP called me and told me it was 100$ a month because of some lies. Fuck that, fuck this, fuck Canada. How much was 12Mb/s with Comcast in the states? Like, 20$?
FUCKING BULLSHIT. You fucking Americans get internet so fucking cheap. I had 10Mb/s (was actually 6.7Mb/s) for about a year and it cost around 80$ a month. Well where I live there is only one provider, and their max speed is 3Mb/s so consider yourself lucky.

Still better than Comcast.
Under 3mbps for >$60/mo here, better than my old ISP(s) though (and in some places its more like 2mbps $100/mo with a 3gb monthly cap)
I just figured... you probably know best though. I don't know how the US works. [editline]01:08AM[/editline] Don't comment on me using IE. I just got windows 7 like 3 hours ago.
my internet connection is provided by none of these companies. so i don't give a shit! still sad for my uncle who is millionaire
don't comment on me using ie. I just got windows 7 like 3 hours ago.
windows 7 is out!??? Omg!
Hey. Drop the comcast hate. 100$/mo for this internet, some TV I don't ever watch and phone.
ive emailed my mp and numerous other political figures in canada about this but i just keep getting the same old "BLAH BLAH WE GET LOTS OF MAIL SO WE CANT RESPOND TO ALL OF THEM SAFLMGDLKGMEDG"
[img_thumb]http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6315/comcastr.jpg[/img_thumb] I just figured... you probably know best though. I don't know how the US works. [editline]01:08AM[/editline] Don't comment on me using IE. I just got windows 7 like 3 hours ago.
That's using a boosting service - real speeds aren't 12mb/s. And that's for 12 months, too. Once you go past 12 months you have to tell the company that you're leaving if they raise your rates or you'll have to deal with $60 per month.
windows 7 is out!??? Omg!
I got a call from Cogeco today saying: "Oh hey, we upped your internet speed by 40% with no additional charge" And now we get then... :saddowns:
