The daylong search west of the Waterloo city boundary began at about 10:30 a.m. when a man — barefoot and draped in a blue velour bathrobe — was spotted walking in the rain along Wilmot Line. He matched the description of 18-year-old Michael Fortune, wanted in connection with Monday night’s attack inside a Talbot Street residence in Kitchener. An arrest warrant has been issued for Fortune, who is wanted on two counts of assault with a weapon, as well as aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, breach of probation and forcible confinement. Fortune remained at large Tuesday night, despite the extensive search. Two women known to Fortune suffered serious but non-life threatening facial and head injuries in the 6 p.m. attack. Police called it a “family disturbance.” Heavily armed tactical officers surrounded the building Monday night, believing Fortune was still inside, but he’d already fled. Hours later, at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, nearby resident Kevin Thomason was driving south in a downpour on Wilmot Line when he passed a man walking north along the edge of the road. A blue bathrobe was draped over his head, soaking wet and dropping down to his knees. He was wearing dark pants, but he wasn’t wearing socks or shoes. “He was oblivious to me,” Thomason said. “Why would a guy be in bare feet way out here?” Thomason wondered. As he continued driving, he remembered a Twitter post he’d seen about a disturbance and a barefoot suspect. He called police to report the sighting. As Waterloo Regional Police resources flooded into the area — tactical and patrol officers, three police dogs and officers on horseback — Thomason later returned with officers to show them exactly where he’d seen the man. Police told Thomason a dog had picked up a scent in that area, and officers were tracking to the west. Cruisers blocked area roads as officers searched through the brush, checking outbuildings and sugar shacks. “There are a lot of hills and valleys and swamps,” said Insp. Kevin Thaler. “There’s a lot of low-lying and thick brush.” Thomason said there were plenty of places in the area where Fortune could take shelter, from seasonal properties on Sunfish Lake to the Alpine Country trailer park. The city of Waterloo lies just to the east. As night fell and temperatures dropped, a York Regional Police helicopter equipped with a forward-looking infrared camera was brought in to try to pinpoint the suspect’s location. “Public safety is our primary concern, so we need to apprehend him,” said Thaler. “Now it’s also about preventing him from freezing to death, as much as it is about catching him.” The helicopter flew over and back above the rural area for about an hour, but there was no sign of Fortune. The search was called off by about 9 p.m. “We’ve basically done what we can to search this area tonight,” Thaler said. Police warned people not to approach Fortune. “Don’t go looking in vacant structures on your properties,” Thaler cautioned. “We don’t want a confrontation.” If you spot Fortune or see something suspicious, call 9-1-1 immediately. He is described as black, six feet, three inches tall, 230 pounds with a heavy build, with black hair and brown eyes.
